Alkalarian??

Several family members of mine have recently started Dr. Robert Young's "Alkalarian" diet (complete with proprietary supplements). I looked at the official website, and my sketch-meter went into overdrive: "5-Day Cleansing Retreats," numerous supplements and products for sale, lots of Feel-Good SuperHealth Rhetoric, and a DONATIONS page. Plus, the "scientific" basis for the program sounds a little precarious -- I don't have an academic background in biology, but I do have sound enough critical thinking skills to question claims like "...Dr. Young concluded that over-acidification of the body is the underlying cause of all disease" [emphasis added]

Most concerning/annoying of all, my web-searches have been unable to turn up any reviews/critiques of the Dr. Young's diet by anyone who isn't selling the books.

So, I ask you: what's up with The pH Miracle Diet? Do Dr. Young's claims have any scientific basis? Are there any known significant health risks involved with the diet (especially since they are starting to adjust their 7 mo.-old son's diet to conform to the Alkalarian plan)?

Your comments?

Thanks,

~L

[and I just can't get past the name "Alkalarian" - it inspires images of remote jungle compounds, voluntary castration and cyanide-laced SuperGreen formula... the Alkalarian Conspiracy? ]

I have little knowledge of this diet but I can say that Naturopaths I believe also follow or advocate a similar way of eating

I also believe that Pierce Brosnan eats only fruit such as Melon until midday, to lower his Ph

then again there might be something to this, for a fifty year old he looks damned good doesn't he?

I might give this a look

Now if I can only get low acidity beer, I will sign up!

I tend to be a bit skeptical of anything that is touted as a panacea. While it would be nice to be able to cure everything with a nice, neat, simple solution, life is not like that. Life is messy and complicated, so is biology. I would be very skeptical of any claims made until an independent scientific institution does studies that corroborate those claims.

Ah...

After digging a little bit further into the website I see that there is a Multi-Level Marketing scheme involved, selling (or selling the "opportunity" to sell) the Innerlight, Inc. supplements, etc. that are preached to be so important to the diet.

Now, it would be a logical fallacy to conclude that because the marketing practices are sketchy, the science is automatically invalid. ---However--- However, I think it only further undermines the credibility of the whole already-shaky enterprise.

I also learned last night that when the woman who turned my family-members on to the Alkalarian lifestyle (who is she, anyway? I don't think it's an old friend or anything - a co-worker maybe? Must find out...) found out about their son's (my nephew's) ear-infection, she immediately concluded that it was caused by his diet - and recommended that he be put on, yes, more Innerlight, Inc. products. You know, for his health and safety. What good parent wouldn't want their child to be healthy and safe? You certainly want to help your child be healthy and safe, don't you? Don't you?

Seen through the lens of MLM, it makes me want to vomit.

Well, if food acidity is the cause of all disease, then naturally those who use this diet should be free of all earthly disease, shouldn't they? Next time I have the flu, I'm gonna go 'round to one of these wankers and start sneezing all over them. "Well, what are you worried about, you can't catch it!"
Feh. So, apart from the dodgy Breatharian/Amway marketing, anyone have a scientific or medical angle on this shit?
I know meditation is supposed to change the Ph level of the blood, and acid/alkaline balance might come into traditional Chinese medicine...

Well, cutting out acid would mean cutting out most if not all of your fruit wouldn't it? Can't see scurvy being that healthy.

Les Gronow has a section on balancing acid and alkaline foods in his book "Breathe In, Breathe Out", along with a section on speeds at which different foods are digested...
I think balancing your foods intelligently is always preferable to these extreme fad diets, like Atkins or whatever.
