I'm working on a project which will be a graphic novel biography of the Chevalier/e D'Eon, an 18th c. French diplomat, soldier, and spy who lived as a man half his life and as a woman for the other half of her life, and who upon death was found to be anatomically male. There's crossdressing and swordfighting and war and religion and feminism. As if the subject matter weren't liability enough, I'm unpublished and the artist is known mainly for queer webcomics. What publishers might pick this up? anyone? Oh well, there's always the hell of self-publishing...

Er, sorry, probably belongs in Creation. Mods, do as you will...

Ooh, The Chevalier! I've always wanted to make a film of his life- sort of like Three Musketeers meets Priscilla.
He also inspired the animated Japanese series "Rose of Versailles".

Whoops, beaten to it again.

I would say you are unlikely to be able to successfully pitch such a series at any publisher - You are better off self publishing - which is entirely feasible - just look at Dave Hitchcock's example...

You should pitch it to Marvel as a creator owned mini-series. It's unlike anything Marvel is publishing right now, and I'm sure they'd jump at the opportunity to publish something unique.
(Somewhere in the comics section Cameron STewart kinda outlines how to publish your book and get it into bookstores)

Is there the possibility that a company specialising in gay/transexual type publishing might consider doing a graphic novel of this type? You might want to try scouring the specialist bookshops down Charing Cross Road for publishers addresses. Might not want to pitch it to them as a 'weirdo project' though!!

Vertigo might go for it.
Maybe if you broke it up into a limited series...

could we see some samples of the artist's work, please?

would not, also, discount your ability to pitch this to regular publishers. it will depend to a degree on the talent of you and your partner.

The artist is the creator of My Life In Blue and is currently working on a period fantasy project which is quite interesting. I believe Cleis Press publishes some gay comics but nothing quite like this.

It seems like it would be more successful as a graphic novel than as a series because I doubt people who don't already know the subject matter would make the commitment to see a series through, while they might pick up and flip through a graphic novel and be interested in the concept once they see what it is. But then I'm completely inexperienced in this regard, so I appreciate everyone's advice.

I'd pick it up, y'know, if I had a comics company and could afford such things...

But I think it sounds like a fun and interesting OGN premise. Be nice to see, one day.

A cross-dressing swordswoman? Two of my favourite things!
