My roommate has a theory that if she downloads music through soulseek that has umlauts in the title or in the artists name, it will generally be good. In this case, she's succeeded mightily. Erkki Kurenniemi seems to have been Finland's Bob Moog and Wendy/Walter Carlos in one person. An amazingly creative inventor of musical instruments, he was also fairly unusual for that era (60s-70s) of academic electronic music in that his work is incredibly listenable today, it doesn't feel at all dated. Also unusual about his output is the feeling of whimsicality that runs through it. Some of it seems as though it could have been prevented by one of the current hoard of MAX/MSP abusers with laptops jetsetting their way through the Index magazine demimonde. There is a review of a compilation here, and another one here.
Here is a brief but interesting interview.
I have been unable to find legitimate links to mp3s, so I encourage you to do the decent thing and steal it. He's quite nice if you like odd experimental music. If you can't find anything, and are interested, PM me, and maybe I can email you a track or two. |
