I just wanted to talk about Evangelion, maybe one of the best series of the 90's. Why NERV confused Lilith with Adam? What is really the AT field? Why the angels attacked one at a time and not all togheter? (of course I know all of the answers, hehehe, I just want to know your toughts)
Also; you love or hate the last two episodes?

Evangelion... Nice to remember.

>Why NERV confused Lilith with Adam?

I don't think they confused them. They lied. Ikari lied to everyone.

>What is really the AT field?

It was our inner field, that keeps our ego from mixing with the exterior world, thats keeps people being individuals.

>Why the angels attacked one at a time and not all togheter? (of course I know all of the >answers, hehehe, I just want to know your toughts)

No idea... Maybe because we needed 26 chapters.

>Also; you love or hate the last two episodes?

Love, of course... They were awesome! Nobody had never did something like this before!

(I have iTunes playing random songs while writing this. And right now, what is it playing? One on Evangelion tracks. The one that played when chapter 26 finishes, end everybody greets Shinji. I really have to watch this series again. Maybe this weekend...)

Great series. End of Evangelion kinda kicked me in the balls unexpectedly, but after the initial shock I liked it.

Evangelion: normal to fucked up in six episodes flat!

Ugh. from many repeated recomendations i bought the first DVD of the series and it really, really, isnt grabbing, catching, intriguing or anything else that would make someone want to see the rest of the series.

Like somebody said in the thread linked to above - or possibly one of the other anime threads here - it's more a less a straight big stompy robots/weedy little kids show up until the halfway point. Then it twists around and you start to realise that earlier episodes had hints of the things to come. That said, there are still some fairly duff episodes in the first half.

It does take a while to get going; you need to watch it fairly fast, and the first few DVDs aren't so hot. Magma Diver, christ, what a remarkably dull episode. But it is worth sticking with purely because of two shifts - the first a third of the way through, when suddenly it twists around and you realise that it's not all about big stompy robots, and that weird things you dismissed as weird were probably worth paying attention to. Two-thirds of the way through, you'll discover that it's all about the weird little things, that the big stompy 'robots' were kind of a cover story, and that you are suddenly having your brain hammered into a gold anvil by a large, evil man.

It is worth it, but you're not wrong when you point out the first few episodes are tiresome. Still, one of the more important shots from episode two: the green eye blinking at Shinji in his dream, him waking up screaming.

That is very, very important.

I've still only seen about the first half dozen episodes of Evangelion. And I think it's pretty good already, so I guess I'll find it absolutely amazing when it takes off into all the promised bad craziness.

Pity those fucking DVDs are so expensive.

I bought an import of the whole season on 3 dvds for about $30 on half.com. Check it out, it's well worth it. The American dvds are insanely high priced.

P.S. has anyone heard the rumor about Hideaki Anno being a former cult member. well you know that japanese armageddon cult that tried to use aerosol cans to disperse poison gas in subway stations? apparently Anno was a member of this cult during a long bout of depression, but left just as it was begining to become violent. alot of the series' religious and apoctalyptic elements stem from Anno's diary entries during his involvement in this cult. the character of Shinji also stems from Anno's journal entries and his thoughts are based on thoughts Anno himself had during his depression.

oh yeah, and another bizarre fact about Anno: when the series ended, many of it's fan's sent Anno letters complaining about it's vague, psychological conclusion. some sent death threats. in "End of Evangelion" some of those death threats flash rapidly across the screen.

I just finished all the DVDs, and End of Evangelion.

I haven't seen Death & Rebirth, is it worth renting?

It was a good ride, but needlessly complicated, no? I've seen the entire series, but I wouldn't have been able to make literal sense of the plot without heavy use of the internet.

Why the angels attacked one at a time and not all togheter?

That's because each angel is Adam's try to make a new humanity to compete with Lilith's humanity, Lilim (us, mankind). Each angel is equivalent to the whole humanity; but while we have multiple AT fields (one for each human being) the angels have just one. Also, each angel is equivalent to each other, so they are all competing to be the new humanity, and if two or more of them were toghter they would be enemies, as each one of them is enemy of mankind.

I haven't seen Death & Rebirth, is it worth renting?

You see how at the end of the series it all goes a bit... weird and internal?

Death and Rebirth show what's actually happening whilst Shinji is off in la-la-land. It's fan-fucking-tastic, the reason why I forgave Anno for the extremely obtuse (yet still good, damn him!) nature of the last few episodes in the series. So you see all the cool stuff like...

S

P

O

I

L

E

R

S

Shinji wanking over an unconscious Asuka.

Misato mercilessly killing government soldiers, then snogging Shinji, then dying.

Asuka kicking some serious ass after patching things up with her mum. Then her Eva is eaten alive by the later Eva series "robots".

Shinji and his mum essentially achieve Godhood, crucified by the later Eva "robots" at great altitude on the tree of life.

Rei melds with Lilith and becoming a giant hermaphrodite (half Kaoru/half Rei) that towers above earth. It looks SO COOL.

Everyone dies as Rei appears to the all the people in the world as the person they love the most, causing their AT fields to disappear and turning the human race into orange goo.

How can you not want to see this?

All that stuff is in End of Evangelion, Nobody's Girl.

I know D&R overlaps some with EoE, but is there anything in D&R that isn't in EoE or the series proper?

If you're a crazed Evangelion whore like I am, I'd wholeheartedly recommend getting the director's cut DVDs with the extended versions of episodes 21 - 24. They splice in some footage from Death and Rebirth, restored footage that was edited out, and brand new animation. It segues into End of Evangelion far smoother than the original episodes. You get a much better account of Asuka's breakdown, more information on Kaoru, and the death of Rei version 2.0 has to be seen to be believed. You won't regret spending the £40... not if you're anywhere near as much of a fan as I am.

So, if i'm watching NGE for the first time (i am), what would be the recommended route?

Is it worth watching the non-director's-cut versions of eps 21-24, or should i just check them out and ignore the originals?

I take it the films should be watched after the series? Wiki tells me that Death and Rebirth is just a compilation of the series, while End of Evangelion is a redo of the series ending. Is there much point in watching D&R? Is Reival of Evangelion literally these two films spliced together, or is there anything to be gained from watching it as well as the other two?

Teach me the NGE way!

The essential stuff to watch is the original edits of episodes 1 to 26 and End of Evangelion, which replaces episodes 25 and 26. You can watch the two alternate endings in any order you like, as long as you see both because both are essential.

Feel free to see the directors cuts of 21 to 24 instead of the originals. You won't be missing out on anything. The additional footage is some deleted material, some brand new stuff and some footage from Death and Rebirth. Some additions are excellent, some are a little too much.

Do not spend money on Death and Rebirth. It is half recap, half material from End of Evangelion It has a cute framing device and some pretty good explanatory notes (the content of which you can find online for free from a bunch of Eva theorists). Only buy if you love the show so much that you become a rabid completist.

I don't know what Revival of Evangelion is, but as I'm a pretty rabid fan that should be enough to tell you how superfluous it is.
