Will be going up to London to see Marillion at the Forum on Sat 10th and staying at a mate's that night. Also seeing them evening of the 11th, but have a whole day to spend in London. Should be meeting up with Smoothly Weaving, maybe Seth and Jack the Bodiless fancy coming up early, and hopefully a mate or two not from the board.

Well ahead of time, but just thought I'd put it out for any board members who are free on that day and fancy meeting for a pint and a pub lunch. If it's a sunny day, so much the better. But I'm led to believe there are some interesting characters in London, so anyone who wants to come along and meet me and the others for mutual oh-you're-not-at-all-like-I-imagined-you type shennanigans, please do! The vibe of the weekend will be very good, I'm confident.

Yeah, count me in.
What time are you thinking?
Does somewhere in the west end suit?

Seth

We're going to the Sunday show, I'll see what's going on.

Jack The Bodiless
17:13 / 29.06.04
Yeah, I'm up for that. Pub, anyone? Speak me a tidal wave...

If you're all going to be goth and doomy, then how about Garlic and Shots?

Actually, I probably don't get a vote - I will be along if I'm in London, but might not be...

Garlic & Shots? Where's that?

Soho - Frith street if memory serves. Best garlic bread in the world.

Sounds very odd. But it's an idea. We'll do that unless anyone else has a better idea. What time is it open from? Thinking to meet for lunch 1pm. And silly question probably, but does it have a garden? I was hoping we could enjoy the sunshine if there is any.

We can always meet there and move on if the aura is wack.

Actually... I don't think it'll be open in the afternoon. You may want to select again.

Any ideas in the west end Suavemente? I was thinking we could just meet in your yard, since it's pretty close to where the gig takes place. Know some good places to eat?

Very much depends on what you fancy, and I'm a little shy about making a recommendation.
My local serves pretty standard pub grub, but it might do the job, and there is some scope for sitting outside.
I hear good things about the Thai fayre in The Lemon Tree, nearby, and The Angel & Crown makes big chalky boasts about it's Sunday lunch. And I know The Chandos is popular round these parts, what with The Gathering's sponsorship deal with Filthbeer...

To be honest I'm not much of an authority on this because, for me, pubs is for drinking in. And if I'm drinking locally, I'm in the Salisbury.

The Chandos is always muy crowded, if nice why not sit outside in Soho Square, or if grotty the Pillars of Hercules, though being tiny that also runs the risk of being crowded unless you get there early...

I like sitting outside the Salisbury but there will probably be a few too many people.

Hmmm. Looks like the weather's pretty much going to tank, so I'm not sure how much consideration we're going to need to give to al fresco seating. Alas.

We could sit outside Sainsbury's instead with a few bottles of thunderbird and omega white cider instead...

Wow, sleaze is opening up the front room. An opportunity not to be missed.

I'll probably be getting in around four-ish, maybe a little after... anyone want to pick a pub? Would prefer pretty close to the Astoria, as Marillion are onstage early (due to curfews, apparently, and they want to deliver a long set) - they'll be on at 8pm on Sunday, and we'll need to get there...

Ain't the Princess Louise within spitting distance of the Astoria? Or the Angel? Seem to recall trying to avoid Warren Ellis at the latter only a few doors from FP...

Angel is rather small and pokey, you would be better choosing between the Princess Louise and The Crown and if the weather is dicey then the Louise is the most spacious, although London's gotherazzi may have booked the upstairs once again.

Our Lady Has Left the Building
12:57 / 07.07.04
The Princess Louise is hardly spacious unless you're comparing it to places that actually lack any space at all, like the interior of a black hole. Which would not suck as much as the Princess Louise.

C'mon Lady, this is only because we persist on going there in groups of 30+ on a Friday evening.

Providing Little Lord Fauntlegoth and his overweight-in-tight-black-lycra minions hasn't booked the upstairs until hell freezes over then there should be adequate space for a group of us.

That, doesn't excuse the fact that the PL is shite, mind.

(Is it just me or has the quality of London's goths been slipping for some time).

Are you deluded? I have been to the PL umpteen times and not once has the upstairs been open. Let's not go to hell through lying to ourselves.

Seth

If it's the Astoria then we should all go to the Crow Bar.

Assuming I get online before Sunday so I know where Im going, I'll probably see you then. I'm running away soon- I'm moving down to Devon at the end of the month with the family I'm au pairing for, so shall have to see you all before then anyway.

The PL is not shite at all, it's a great pub. Cheap nice beer, lovely decor, Masons, crisps etc. And on Sunday afternoons it's half empty. But none of this matters as I'm not going to be there unfortuately. Have fun, wherever you go.

Seth
08:31 / 08.07.04
You suck, Illmatic.

Y'see, I reckon Sam Smiths is definitely the way forward. Cheap, cheap, cheap.

My vote is for the Blue Posts, as it's nearest the venue. I need to get to the bottom of their curious Pearl Jam fixation.

SOMEONE (WHO IS GOING TO BE THERE AND WHO KNOWS THE AREA) NOMINATE THEMSELVES TO BE IN CHARGE, AND PICK. A FUCKING. PUB. NEAR THE ASTORIA.

All this artless blagging about pubs in London is all very charming and stuff, but CUT ME. A FUCKING. BREAK. I would like to know where to meet all you artlessly charming people sooner than an hour before I catch the train. It would be nice. Do you see?

Blue Posts, upstairs, someone else nominate the time as I'm not going to the concert.

I assume you mean the one on Newman Street?

Looks like 7 Beats is aiming for 1pm, which is early for me, so I might persuade him to meet me in my local and warm up there for the trek along Charing Cross road. If everyone else is planning to venture out at a more Sundayish hour, maybe we should meet at the Blue Posts about 3 or 4. Anyone who wants to join us earlier can take a punt that we'll be in the Salisbury, or PM me for my number.

Seth
15:02 / 08.07.04
Jack the Crosspatch and I will be at the Blue Posts on Newman Street by 4pm at the latest. Although brother dear is pretty shit at getting to train stations on time.

I hope you've learned a valuable lesson from this, 7 Beats: when you start a thread to arrange a London meet always state the pub at the time in the first post as if it's not open for debate.

I was, indeed, utter bubbish at getting to the station on time. Until I started commuting to Basingrad every day, at which point I became feckin' brilliant at it. I will indeed be at the Posts with my bequiffed, befreckled brother by four... Look forward to seeing any of y'all that can pop in for a pint!

Yeah, this sounds like the thing to do. Even though being even vaguely associated with anything without Fish does seem a bit, y'know... well they swim in smaller ponds now, it seems. Magic gloves or otherwise.

OK, if someone could furnish me with directions to the Blue Post so I don't have to wander around London crying like I've been bumraped by a gang of street poofs...
