Privacy, internet and otherwise in the workplace.

The unfortunate who have day jobs (myself included) might find themselves a bit more watched than others. It seems commonplace for all internet and email activity to be monitored, and it would seem that more and more cameras are popping up all over the place. Now, we are all only human (most of us) and things like surfing the net and emailing friends and such happens, but I generally feel that if one's duties are being performed without problem, then it doesn't matter one bit who's online when and what they are looking at. How do you feel about workplace privacy? Does the strict monitoring of employees make for a better run company, or is this a load of horse shit and an invasion of privacy?

Ah, but no matter how well one performs one's duties, time spent on the internet could be better spent improving one's performance of one's duties.

I've never worked anywhere with access to the internet.

I reckon most people piss about a lot during the work day, whether it's on the internet or not doesn't really make much odds. If you're not gossiping on the net you'll be gossiping with work mates. You could say the internet even helps the office dynamic if it stops pointless office power games by bored employees.

I must admit that I do not give a monkey's fart about anything apart from what I can get away with, internet-wise. If I have nothing to do at work I feel quite justified in spending the whole day abusing wankers on the internet; also, if I have stuff to do but I am avoiding doing it, I also feel quite justified. The only difference is that one is easier to defend if it ever comes down to a tribunal. If you can say "I did my job regardless of this internet stuff" you're in a better position.

The only loyalty I have is to those of my workmates whom I like and wouldn't want to get into shit because I'm not doing anything - and that ethic only extends so far.

fuck it. the majority of people on here are from the US or UK or Canada. CCTV UK? Just give that shit over to the man. Fuck it. And lets face it, there are a number of people on here that would sell someone out to get ahead.

Dont be afraid. I just know who you are. or at least what kind of person you are. Oh well.

Sax - are you a manager? Tee hee - sounds a bit manager-esque is all.

I feel more than justified wasting time on the net. I think my company feels it's more important to have happy workers than be too strict and controlling which ultimately stifles production.

No-one is switched on all the time. Some companies realise this and let their employees slack a little sometimes - and this - for me at least means I feel more comfortable about working hard for them, as I know there's no undue pressure to. Playing on the net is part of that.

Obviously they aren't too keen on you looking at porn, but frankly I don't think looking at porn at work is a good idea anyway! I've never been warned off looking at sites, despite (sometimes inadvertantly) visiting some pretty awful ones.
