Creating a library

If anyone has any suggestions about this it would be much appreciated.

I'm a volunteer at the local youth centre and today me and one of the workers were tossing around ideas for the summer programme. I admitted that I'd quite like to set up a book group, if anyone was interested, which led to us thinking about setting up our own library in the centre. And, since he's got enough on his plate atm, I've been given the job of working out the practicalities of it all and seeing whether it's do-able.

So, has anyone ever had any experience doing this kind of thing?

One thing I'm thinking of is buying books in bulk. We won't be buying much, and relying a lot on donations, but obviously we can't sit around and wait for people to give us books to give them. Are there any cheap UK-based book sites? I had an idea that charity shops might be useful; an aquantience does a lot of amature shows and relies on a nationwide database of costumes some charity has (can't remember which one tho) so I thought that someone, somewhere might have the same for books?

Is the "write-your-name-down-if-you're-taking-a-book-and-mind-and-bring-it-back-in-two-weeks" system too simplistic? I remember all too well it's dubious success borrowing course books at school, but a better system which doesn't require computers and such eludes me.

And, all importantly, where does one buy those snazzy clear-plastic book covers?

You could get in touch with the publishers and ask for remaindered copies and old editions, or even new copies to support your fledgling effort. Failing that there's people out there who make a living out of selling remaindered books. These lend themselves to being sold in bulk and will often get you loads of books very cheap.

Go to your local independent bookshop and have a chat with the owner. Independents have a hard enough time making a profit these days but they still get the trading discounts on the books. If you bring in a big enough order you might be able to haggle about the prices. Tempt them with free advertising (a mention in the press release about the opening, photo opp in local newspaper, bla bla bla the usual).

What kind of funding do you have for this? Would the local council/library board/education people be willing to inject some more money? Child literacy is a big thing right now and I'd say a borough would support any kind of campaign to improve the level of child literacy in their area. See if they would donate old furniture (think shelves, comfy chairs, coffee tables, a filing cabinet for your catalogue). Actually, ask the businesses in your area for this as well.

Here is a shareware cataloging program. A quick google for 'free library catalogue software' throws up more results, but that one looks like it would do the trick at first.

If you want a list of publishers let me know, and I'll get my bookshop friends to run off a list that I can e-mail you.

Addendum: I knew I saw this out there a while ago: Koha, a totally free, open-source library management package.

And I'll ask my friend who runs a bookshop where he gets the plastic book covers from. These are the adhesive kind that you'll need to trim...but I'm sure the manufacturer had slip-on covers as well.

I like Abebooks -secondhand bookshops around the UK put their catalogues online, and you can buy through the site. I'm not sure how cheap it is for what you're looking for though, as I normally use it to find out-of-print books which tend to be a bit pricier.

Grey Area is right, it would be pretty easy to get funding for this kind of thing, I betcha.

Failing that, Abe books would be good, not least because it will put you in touch with a large number of second hand bookshops where you have a greater liklihood of being able to get multiple copies of the same book...

Ask your local newspaper if they can spare any review copies of recent books.

Are you planning on fiction and non-fiction, or just one or the other?
