The Cure - 'The Cure'

Current reviews rate this as The Cure's best album since Disintegration, which admittedly isn't saynig a great deal, as they've only released four proper albums since Disintegration...

Still, the buzz is considerable. I haven't heard anything off it yet - anyone out there got an opinion?

For those fans who're out of the loop for whatever reason, it's released next Monday, 28th June...

I met the Cure last week! Admittedly, it was only to tell them where the lavatory was, but they were utterly charming and told me that I was ever so helpful. Me likie!

Ooh! Ooh!

I'd heard rumours there was new stuff coming out, but Jack, you've just made my day. (Even if it's bollocks, the whole "going to the shops to buy the new Cure album" is an experience I've missed these last few years...)

I adored Bloodflowers- if it's half as good as that it'll be worth twelve quid of anyone's money.

Well, apparently the single was released on 22nd May, but no one told me. NME just gave it a rave (for them) review - apparently it's their angriest and most vital album for years.

Working with Ross Robinson (co-inventor of nu-metal, unfortunately - but also producer of At The Drive-In's last album and a rabid Cure fan) has apparently agreed with them. Robert Smith said that when they first started playing in the studio he went apeshit at them, going "What the hell are you doing? For fuck's sake, do you know who you are?! You're the Cure!" Cap'n Bob says the kick up the arse is just what they needed, and he hasn't felt this good about the band for ages... all of which is rather pant-wettingly enticing! Woo hoo, new Cure!

Oh, by the way - I loved Bloodflowers too. Are we alone? I think we might be.

Oh well... let us sit upon the carpet and play sad songs from Bloodflowers...

Bloodflowers is a great album, particularily compared to the ones they released before that one, wild mood swings and some other I barely remember.

I love Ross Robinson, for what he does rather than the bands he's worked with. I'm really interested to hear this now I know he's involved.

Ah, yes, I remember hearing last year that they were going to work with Ross Robinson...I loved At The Drive-In's Relationship Of Command ("The most exciting guitar album since Manic Street Preachers' The Holy Bible" - me), so I was pretty excited about it. But I didn't hear anything else about it, 'til now. Bloodflowers was pretty good, alright. But can anybody tell me who's in the Cure now, apart from Smith?

According to the sleeve notes, they're currently Fat Bob (of course), Simon Gallup, Perry Bamonte, Jason Cooper and Roger O'Donnell.

Bought this yesterday... what with it being a new Cure album an' all, I'm gonna have to live with it for a few days before I can get a proper perspective, but so far I'm loving it. Personal favourite track at the moment? "Labyrinth"- nice Eastern-sounding guitars and percussion like wot woz on "Hanging Garden" and "Faith". And, of course, the wonderfully broken voice of the Smithster howling over the top.

"There is no terror in my heart/ Death is with us all/ We suck him down with our first breath/ And spit him out as we fall..."

Yahhhhhh! This rocks.

It really does, doesn't it?
I always find with Cure albums, there's an initial "fucking hell!" after which they get weaker or stronger on repeated listening. This is definitely getting better every time.

Please say it's the same you... ahh. They're back. Properly back.

And the best thing about it is...the Cure's back catalogue has all been re-released at mid-price! Well, almost all. This makes me very happy. Time to upgrade my collection...!

Oh, thank fuck for that... means I can finally throw away my completely fucked old tapes (apart from the Standing On The Beach comp, for reasons any Cure fan knows).

JtB- yeah, I can't believe they haven't rectified that GLARING omission- the world NEEDS "Mr Pink Eyes", it truly does. (sorry, that looks like I'm taking the piss, but I'm actually being totally sincere)

Mine's buggered as well (although 15 years ain't bad for a cassette)... but they'll "pry it out of my cold, dead hands" as the saying goes...

If there's another fucking Mint Car on this sucker, they're all dying at the end of my fists of you've-been-in-a-relationship-with-the-same-girl-since-school death.

[ruffles Roth's hair] Ah, you pop-monkey you, you love it.

And no, there isn't a 'Mint Car' on this album, unfortunately. There is a 'Labyrinth', and also a 'Taking Off', though, which is good.
