Bush insists on Al-Qaeda link to Iraq

Full story here.

A recent report suggests that there was little - if any - link between Iraq and Al-Qaeda. Bush has responded with the intelligent and informative comment that:

"The reason I keep insisting that there was a relationship between Iraq and Saddam and al-Qaeda is because there was a relationship between Iraq and al-Qaeda."

So that's cleared that up, then.

What next? Is Bush to announce he remains resolutely convinced by Ptolemaic system of the world?

I think they are trying to fluffy it up a bit. My current understanding of the state of play is that Bush and Blair are saying that there were massive links between Iraq and Al Qaida, such big links that Saddam and Osama Bin Ladin actually had a gay marriage, because they were young, crazy and in love. It was just that Saddam didn't help Al Qaida when they decided to fly planes into the WTC.

So what we need is another massive Government enquiry to be done in three weeks to say that there are no links at all ever between Al Qaida and Iraq.

so the best in political reportage is actually the weekly world news? because you know they had that saddam bin laden marriage covered weeks ago.

does bush actually believe this? or do we think he's being an electioneer?

To be honest, people have been having a problem with this since the initial stages of the 'war on terrorism.' That was one of my early questions. What the hell does Iraq have to do with Al-Qaeda? Now, some fifteen months after the start of the war, the Bushies are having to answer for their lack of answer in the first place. No 9-11 connection, no weapons of mass destruction. Sure did get some cheap oil, though...

(A friend of mind had an altercation where he was wearing a button of Bush that said, 'An insult to morons.' Someone came up and said that us cynical youth don't understand that this isn't just a war for oil. Friend replied, 'What's it for then, orange juice?' I often find creepy the ability for baby-boomers to rationalize and approve for the most stupid war so far.)

And just before I shut up, on the direction of 'war on terrorism,' a scary little idea is that since it's on 'terrorism' it doesn't matter WHERE it is. Maybe the war will shift to Prince Edward Island, just to keep people distracted from the complete lack of morality. Brought to you by CNN.

I really don't know what Bush believes, but people who know people (as opposed to psychologists and psychiatrists) say they believe that OJ Simpson genuinely believes someone else killed his ex-wife, so there may also be the added wrinkle of what Bush believed before he spent hours denying it to the President. And it's not like he's going to put his hands up and go "Dang, you asked three times, okay there is no link and I was just doing it because I'm evil".

As someone who has no knowledge of psychology but has a deep psychological need to see George W. Bush as a flawed, evil and vindictive man I do find I prefer the reading that he has a strong need to better his father and that to do so he needs to primarily overthrow Saddam and win a second term as President. I also like the 'dry drunk' reading of him which suggests he tends to obsessive patterns of behaviour which could result in him convincing himself that what he says is true.

But I'm a librarian, not a mental healthcare specialist.
