"Man from Room X" reprinted

From those in the UK and Ireland, "The Man From Room X", the story that first appeared in New X-Men Annual 2001 and introduced Xorn, has been reprinted in Essential X-Men #114.

This is a good, cheap way to read the story if, like me, you missed it the first time around. Particularly as it hasn't been reprinted in any of the New X-Men TPB's.

The issue also reprints X-Treme X-men #6 (not so thrilled about that) and costs a mere £2.40

I don't know if Essential X-Men is available in the US...

At first I thought this was a prophecy proclaiming something coming forty years from now... Because to me, Essential X-Men is, well, that series of big thick b&w reprints. Heh.

So wait, this story isn't even in any of the NewXMEN hardcovers? How can it be a complete collection?

The annual is in the hardcover. It just wasn't in the first printing of the 'E is for Extinction' TPB. I believe it is included in the second printing onwards of the 'E' TPB.

Is it in the sideways stretchy format-thing ?

I'm guessing not, as that'd mean sideways binding, but maybe they've gone for it...

I believe it is included in the second printing onwards of the 'E' TPB.

It is? Fuckers! That's hardly fair to those of us who bought the first TPB.

And yep, it's sideways printed with regular binding. Like that sideways X-Force issue from way back when. So you have turn the book and flip the pages up.

It's definitely in the volume I hardcover as well.

Actually, there were no double-page spreads, so sideways binding isn't necessary. I think it looks really good in the HC, especially as it's shorn of ads and other distractions.

There were some double page spreads, but they were cleverly chopped/split in the hardcover edition.

Not so cleverly done in this. Looked a bit odd but worked well enough, I suppose.

Wasn't there a reference to Wolverine and Domino shagging in the annual? I think they edited that out.

The only double-page spread I remember for sure (I no longer have the original issue) was the one of Xorn seeing the world for the first time in however many years. The TPB's (yes, btw, it is included in the current printing) clever solution to that one was to leave the right-hand page out altogether. No big loss, actually, as it was just more landscape, and the point was adequately made by the one side.

Those of us in the US have no idea what Essential X-Men is, other than a big trade papebrack reprinting of old X-Men books.

Well... thats what it is so you don't really need to know much more do you?

The other 2 page spreads I was referring to (apart from the landscape one mentioned) were multiple panelled pages, but there were parts that crossed the pages.

About Logan and Domino, there's some flirting when they're jumping out of the building into the pool, but the comments about them shagging are actually in part 1 of 'Murder at the Mansion' when Jean is seeing Scott's memories of that night. Emma uses "Logan and Domino are making barnyard animal noises" as a come-on to poor repressed Scottie.

Just a specualtive question:
Does this make the annual worth a lot/more then? I haven't EVER seen a copy of it (missed it the first time round) and it seems not many people have the original but have reprints in TPB's etc.

*has the original... mwahahah!*

Yes, well, not sure about the worth of it, and it took some hunting to get the issue proper, even when it'd just come out. Involved blackmailing the comic shop guy with pictures of him and Mikhail Gorbachev having a smoke on the severed fingers of a Malaysian prostitute...

Or not.

Round these parts (Glasgow, Scotland, UK) it was in plentiful supply. It took a wee while for New X to catch on here, though (surprising, since it's Morrison's home). But I think I have two copies kicking about, plus I have it in the shiny hardcover...

I was slow on the uptake for NXM but I managed to pick up the first four issues for less than £1 each almost half way through the run... I just thinks its weird that I've never seen the annual (proper, not reprint).

Actually, there was a reference to Dominoe and Logan experiencing each other's company after the mission. Dominoe said something about no strings and animal passion, Logan mentioned that all of Xavier's teachers get a platinum card to pay for drinks.

Not that it really matters... whoo boy.

Thanks for the tip. I'll pounce on that when I see it. I also missed the annual. And I got the 1st edition of the tpb so missed it there as well.

Yeah, spacemonkey, that's what I meant by flirting.

I ain't a subtle guy when it comes to the lay-dees.

Thanks for the tip - I picked it up today.

Two questions:

1/ Where does it fit in the run?
2/ I 'only' bought the regular title - were there any other stories like this that I haven't got?

Thanks.

It takes place right after "E is for Extinction" and before everything else.

(I just reread that so - perfect.)

Is the title "Man from Room X" taken from the 1951 "classic" The Man From Planet X, directed by Edgar Ulmer and starring John Lawrence and Enid Elliot?

Yes, you're right. That Grant sure does love borrowing.

If anyone's still confused, the UK Essential X-Men is a monthly US-format comic reprinting stuff from various X-titles. I don't usually buy it (well, until this one) so I don't know how they choose which to do, but I'm sure someone will be able to fill you in.

definitely worth mentioning that these marvel reprints are the balls. cunts like me have seen it all before of course, but they are putting out quality quality stuff - miller daredevil, ditko spidey, steranko fury, adams avengers. the sort of thing you could in no way get your hands on in a parochial newsagent when i were a nipper, and now bloody everywhere. they ain't know they been born.

I love those essential books. Pure quality and a good afternoon's reading all for a tenner, bargain. Same with the Steranko Fury TPB, though irritatingly enough the first volume of Miller's Daredevil is out of print
