Come on. there must be a site with a collection of relevant works etc that could be a starting point. Please help.
Can i narrow it down by saying my main area of focus is Western Tradition from 1880 onwards.

for one of those books that is readable and purports to give you a potted history of the entire history of where the hermetic traditon went and came from, you might look for 'the elixir and the stone' by michal baigent and richard leigh.

I think it really is too vast a subject. If you want to concentrate on the period since 1880, you'd need to start with the Theosophists, move onto to the Golden Dawn, and take it from there - I don't no any one volume, let alone one website, that's made an attempt at stiching this all together, but there are many specialised histories of all the seperate areas out there.

Madam Blavatsky's Baboon might be a good starting point, though it's written from a sceptical point of view.

BTW, Why does it have to be a PDF? What's wrong with books? Can't beat 'em IMO.

For western post 1880 stuff you might want to take a gander at http://homepage.sunrise.ch/homepage/prkoenig/otoa.htm and the other pages around that.

You should also look at the Macrocosm section of Hutton's Triumph of the Moon. This is a book, about Wicca, but don't let that put you off.

Illimatic, downloaded pdf's are free. Books cost money.
That said I still prefer books if it's something I intend to read more than once. There's just something about the feel of holding a book that enhances the pleasure of reading.
But I figure most people who read regularly feel like that.

Very true, i love books as much as the next person. However, at the moment it is purely financial, hence the pdfs.
