Superman: Metropolis

I know most of you hate Chuck Austen (and often for good reason), but did anyone read this series last year?

I was initially drawn in by the amazing art of Danijel Zezelj. It really captured mood and character, while remaning interestingly artistic. Zezelj was replaced later in the series by Teddy Kristianson, whose art is also quite easy on the eyes, but I found myself missing Zezlj.

I thought it was a damn good little mini-series. A nice sci-fi story (derivative, of course, as comic book sci-fi usually is), rendered well.

It was basically a modern updating of the old "Superman's pal Jimmy Olsen" comics from the old days, but somehow it did that without sucking. It takes place during the Tech phase of Metropolis, when the city was suddenly becoming ultra-futuristic faster than the people could handle it.

It also featured the Creeper prominently, which is always a good idea as far as I'm concerned.

I looked through this in the store as it came out -- I do like Zelejzs' art (spelling?), and it's cool that it used the Creeper and tried to give Jimmy Olsen some character development (also tried to make sense of the B13 Tech storyline, and the Lena Luthor becomes subsumed by Braniac storyline)... sometimes Austen can be halfway decent and make you not want to run screaming from the comic shop, and this seemed like one of those times. (I say 'halfway decent' as in 'pretty decent average mediocre stories'- he is capable of those now and then, as others here have sometimes noted) It had the usual Chuck Austen's views on sex and sensuality routines which have grown very tiresome. But it seemed far less bad than most of Austen's work.
