Italians Investigate Occult Killings

Wed Jun 9, 5:18 AM ET
By AIDAN LEWIS, Associated Press Writer

ROME - A 19-year-old girl is stabbed to death — allegedly by a group of young Satanists who thought she personified the Virgin Mary. Her 16-year-old companion, no longer considered a reliable sect member, is killed and buried alongside her.

The discovery last week of the two victims' burial place has sparked an investigation into a metal band scene in Milan and its possible links to Satan worshippers, according to details that emerged Tuesday.

The disappearance of Chiara Marino and Fabio Tollis in 1998 had remained a mystery until earlier this year, when one of the people later accused of the murders began to cooperate with authorities.

Prosecutors now suspect an occult sect carried out the killings in a drug-fueled ritual, said Francesca Cramis, lawyer for one of the four people arrested in the case.

Its members belonged to a heavy metal band, "Beasts of Satan," and frequented a heavy metal bar in Milan called "Midnight," said Cramis, speaking by telephone with The Associated Press. Marino was close to the group, and investigators found her room decorated with black drapes, candles and a fake skull.

In January 1998, members of the sect took Marino and Tollis to woods near Somma Lombardo, northwest of Milan and killed them in an apparent Satanic ritual, investigators say.

According to police, they had already tried — and failed — to kill the two by burning them alive in a car on New Year's Eve, said Cramis. One of those arrested was Andrea Volpe, the former boyfriend of a third victim, Mariangela Pezzotta, buried alive after being shot in January.

It was the probe of her murder that led authorities to the buried remains of Tollis and Marino.

Prosecutors declined to talk with reporters Tuesday.
"Leave us to work — this probe is delicate and we need to proceed with a lot of caution," Prosecutor Antonio Pizzi said.

Authorities are investigating whether the killers are part of a wider network of Satanists and were taking orders when they killed and offered up their victims.
Oreste Benzi, a priest who works to rehabilitate Satanists, estimates that these worshippers of the occult number around 600,000 in Italy.

"Satanists and those belonging to the occult are often unsuspected people and their goal is morally and psychologically destroy whoever works against them," Benzi told the Vatican (news - web sites)'s missionary news service Fides. "Often it is the most defenseless people who fall into the net of the sect," he said.

Sure, they must be Satanists. They couldn't possibly be murderous psycho swine (no offense to swine as a group).

Based on what little I know about Satanism (Setianism), I can't imagine its practitioners having the desire to kill anyone. This sort of thing really bothers me.

I guess it depends on your definition. If the article is accurate -- that is, if they really killed the girl because they thought she was an incarnation of the Virgin Mary -- the killers probably think of themselves as satanists. I'm sure LaVey-type satanists would just think they were crazed morons.

Just from reading what you posted I would say that the EVIDENCE of Satanism is about as slim as rice paper. They were into heavy metal and had black curtains... SATANISTS!

Ok, I'm Italian and I'm in Italy at the moment, so here's what's going on.
As reported in the article you quoted, it all began with Mariangela Pezzotta's murder committed by her former boy friend Andrea Volpe;then the police discovered the corpses of other two victims Marino and Tollis, who disappeared in 1998.Now, what the article doesn't say is that all the peolpe involved, including Andrea Volpe's friends who referred at themselves as "Beasts of Satan" and the victims too,are all drug addict, the kind of suburban junkies that is easy to meet exspecially in the North of Italy.
However, the evidence of these persons self proclaiming themselves as "Satanists"(at least in one of the meanings of the word)is not so thin as you think, Nietzsch: at least, they think that ritual murders is what a good satanist would do,and it seems they are linked with a group from Tourin (they say Tourin is the third corner of a "magical triangle" together with some other towns in other countries I can't remember at the moment;I'm somewhat sceptic about that, however what's for sure is that is a strange town in which strange things happens and it would reserve another thread). But this could be a defense strategy as well.
In Italy it seems that we already had something like that during the Mostro di Firenze's killings: do you remember? It was a chain of murders in Florence between the 70's and the 80's and the police at the moment is investigating about a connection with a Satanist group.
Finally, a personal and a bit chilling note: even if I'm from the south I live in Milan. A month ago I had some problems with my car, I went to the car service and there I met a middle aged man who needed his car absolutely for the day after. We talked a bit, and he told me the day after he had to go to Varese(the small town in which the murders occurred) to talk with the police as the gun he legally had at home had been used by his daughter's boyfriend in a killing. He was desperate. A week agoI saw his photo on the newspaper: he was the father of a girl involved in the case.

Problem with this isn't that the killers thought of themselves as Satanists. One can call oneself anything and do almost anything as well as believe almost anything. The problem arises when, as in the article quoted, the behavior of a few psychopaths gets generalized to ALL practitioners of the occult.

How'd I know they were going to be heavy metal fans?Could this turn into a bit of a "witchhunt" against metal bands and occultists is a country like Italy where the church is pretty strong?
Always good publicity for heavy metal bands, but the Satanic child abuse myths of the 80's wern't that long ago. Totally inoccent people had they're children taken into care on the strengths of the Freudian fantsies of born again Christians. There are real black magick groups operating, but they're very thin on the ground, persons I know smelt a couple of groups out in Ireland in recent years. They're pretty thin on the ground I am guessing, and don't get malajusted gothy type tennagers to do their dirty work, not like vodoo type black artists in central and southern America, some of whom have got caught with loadsa corpses. There was a high ranking European(that narrows it down,ha,ha) politician in recent years who I
know was pretty involved with the more nastier end of occult practice, but I ain't telling his name!

I don't think it could turn in a witch hunt against heavy metal fans, but the whole story will cause a lot of prejudices, that's for sure.
You know, living in Italy between the mid 90's and now is a quite strange thing: genrally most people claim themselves to be catholic, but they doesn't seems that interested in spiritual life definitely.
And then there is sincretism spirituality, exspecially from the south: my grandma, for example, is something like a right wing catholic who performs rites against bad eye that aren't catholic at all...

1) If someone is killed, then that's surely one less person for "satan" to have control over, right? So why would he want his followers to kill people?

2) In't it one of the great shames of the human race when beleifs cause people to kill?
