Gaiman & McKean at the movies

Saw Neverwhere for the first time the other day and it got me wondering at what stages are Mirror Mask and the Death movie.

Also, I remember reading that there was going to be a DVD of Gaiman's mockumentary, A SHORT FILM ABOUT JOHN BOLTON. Is it scheduled for release? Has anyone seen it?

How about any of McKean's other short films like N[EON]?

Neil Gaiman usually updates whenever he knows something about what's going with both of those projects at his blog. http://www.neilgaiman.com

I would go there, and do search on the page for it...

Last I heard was a DVD release this fall, with possibly a small theatrical run. He apparently saw some new footage of it recently...rough cut of most of it or something.

McKean was planning to release a DVD compendium of all of his other short films and motion work (commercials, etc.). It got put on hold when Mirrormask turned into a full time job. Ever seen THE WEEK BEFORE? It was his first movie. I have it on VHS. Paid a fortune for it, but it's probably the loveliest bit filmmaking I've ever seen.

Oh god, don't get me started on McKean. I have an immense collection of books, comics, posters, blah blah blah. An insane amount of which is signed. His photography books in particular are beautiful.

Thanks much for the info. I hope MIRROR MASK hits the theatres here in LA at least.

Why straight to DVD?

I gues because not enough people would go to see it in the cinema to make it profitable, whereas a small but fanatical audience will purchase it on the low-risk, high-profit DVD format.

Ahhhh... Genius!

maybe straight to DVD is the future of low budget filmaking.

If you really want to keep up with Gaiman and much more besides, can I suggest Bloglines . Oh, and if you love McKean, you must wander into a bookshop and buy Varjak Paw.

I feel I must mention that there is a Barbeloid presence in Mirrormask. We are truly everywhere. (Ruthless editing may deprive us of the crucial "heroine gets on bus with freaks in background" sequence.)

Yes. We were the sexy ladies. Bulgy-eyed Neil Gaiman perved over us. It's a bit wrong.

Except that by the final cut we'll probably be the sexy ladies with the ibis heads.

Well, a talented director will bring out all manner of surprising aspects of their actors. He's going to honour my inner Ibis head.

I worked on the Short Film About John Bolton. Was okay - Ska were helping out with the possibilty of producing something with Neil before he got caught up with Hensons. Had Jonothan Ross as himself, and the guy from 'We're History' in it, and ran a bit too long and loose, but okay.

I saw the mockumentary about John Bolton one year ago, at a con in Portugal, with Gaiman in the same room... quite simply, it was one of the greatest days of my life!

It's good fun, I especially loved the 'taking the hats off' joke (or was that true? Poor Bolton, there's no respect anymore) and the surreal ending with the interviewer lost in the graveyeard at night. I wish I can see it again one day. And does anyone know the name of the actor who played Bolton, or was that the man himself?

It weren't John Bolton, he played one of the socialite party people at the gallery. Can't remember his name though, I'm terrible with names.

Although I mentioned it in the Prisoner of Azkaban thread, I feel I should repeat it here: Dave McKean worked as a "visual consultant" on the most recent Harry Potter film.

So, if you're a completist, you'll need a copy of that.

Mirrormask interview, news and stills

apparently McKean is also going to tidy up the thing they showed at San Diego Comic Con and put it up as trailer sometime soon.

total sucky movie business politics in not mentioning mckean in the trailer!

Well, presumably the thinking is that some people outside comics have heard of Neil Gaiman, whereas nobody who is not goinbg to go and see MirrorMask anyway is going tobe persuaded to go by having his name added...
