Neverwhere, the BBC Series

Just saw the first three episodes of this series from an A&E DVD. Naturally, I much prefer the novel, but I thought it was a good example of producing imaginative fantasy on a very small budget.

As with the novel, it felt a lot like HARRY POTTER for adults. Of course, Gaiman also came up with Tim Hunter in BOOKS OF MAGIC, but I think there was just a similar sensibility and no direct connection between the characters.

The best thing, by far, about the series is the credit sequence at the beginning that through Gaiman's commentary, I learned was created by Dave Mckean using a 16mm camera and his computer. Has McKean done any other motion picture work?

Is this Neverwhere as in the Richard Corben Neverwhere? The one with the naked hung dude?

Yes McKean has done other motion picture work - a couple of things with iain Sinclair including the falconer if memory serves - check out the IMDB.

As for the what's better, Book or Film - Its interesting to note that Neverwhere was written as a TV show before Gaiman wrote it as a novel...

Possibly the worst way you could spend 3 hours outside of bowel surgery(were they half hour episodes?? My mind is scarred from the experiece). From the lowsy acting by the heavies which would be more impressing if they were in clown costumes to the RADA Puss-In-Boots ranter, to the below sub-par writing; 'My name is Door, I'm a Rat-Talker.' And the subway station gags are just that.. in my throat.

Then again some people love it.

Hello! All right, don't love it, but it is all right. One episode too long, was filmed on video rather than film so looks like an episode of Doctor Who in a studio even when it's on the Ark Royal outside, and a main emotional point revolves around an animatronic bull which just doesn't work. But the guy who plays Islington rocks.

I may be wrong here, but I'm fairly sure that it wasn't animatronic.

It was a Highland Cow.

Animatronic would have been a blessing, methinks.

Oh god it was awful. Essentially it would have made an OK-ish kid's TV programme (one part panto, one part Doctor Who, three parts ham). The credit sequence at the start really was great. I had such high hopes when I saw that credit sequence for the first time. What an utterly crushing disappointment the programme itself was.

Perhaps the greatest disappointment of my teenage years, and that includes all the unrequited loves, angsty alienation, and world-touring bands that never went any further than a name.

It was a real animal for the shot used every episode of a cow trotting. The close quarters fighting bit was a fake cow.
