Just when we thought he'd forgot about us....
The last ish felt a little slight, and, TBH, this did too, BUT it feels soooo good to return to school with Ginny and watch her fuck shit up. I dig the way Lapham refuses to sentimentalise kids - in fact, true to form, he plays up the spite and viciousness. School is often a dark, dark place and it's so good to see it represented like this in a popular form. Having said that, however, our Dave never loses sight of the fact that the Leeds family are people too (maaaaaaaaan) and, after much cuntery, he hits us w/ that one panel family scene and we're reminded, effortlessly, that there's more to Kev than his mega-jock affectations. And the cool stoner, likewise, doesn't get away with it - he's called Leon "Nigger" more than once...
It's the shit like this that I really like.
Oh, and the fight at the end. The fight was cool. Long haired rock-freaks giving it some high-flying, karate-knee action! Superb.
Aaaah, so much conflict on the surface of things, but, hmmm, this is Stray Bullets. All this schoolyard brawling (and, oh, wasn't that opening panel sooo evocative. I could feel the rain and the concrete and I could just hear the shouting. We are the kid running to catch the show!) is all well and good, but it's just setting the scene. The preview for next month's ish spells it out - the shit hasn't even begun to hit the fan yet. And who are those two hard arses? Older brothers?
Very excited.
And finally, Lapham, you ARE a cheeky, cheeky Daddy! |
