Internet Comic Book Database?

The thought popped into my head a little while ago: Is there some sort of megalithic online database of as many comics as the organizers can get their grubby mitts on, all cross-referenced by characters, writers, artists, publishers, etc., much in the same way as the Internet Movie Database is? I imagine it would also include cover scans, full credits by individual issues, direct links to issues in a single storyline (especially useful in connecting stories that crossover between different books), precedents and references made within, direct ramifications of events portrayed, etc.?

And if it DOESN'T exist, well... why not? I realize it would involve a maddening amount of work to make happen, and there are likely some copyright pricklies to be circumnavigated, but both those roadblocks would seem to me to be easily countered by making the project fairly open source. So again, why not?

There's the Grand Comics Database... which seems pretty comprehensive.

There used to be 2 or 3 sites like this, perhaps they merged? I will check my favourites listing at home later for the url's.

I'm actually working on one. It's in the very very early stages, but I definitely want good cross-linking, storyline/TPB indexes, etc. And, I want the ability to have users annotate books too.

Course, I don't see it competing with those two fine databases...
