The villain Arcade in an X-Men circus thing, I think - Mastermind braindwashed the X-Men to make them think there were circus freaks. I think Byrne drew it -- somewhere around issue 133, maybe?

I think you're thinking of a Classic X-Men cover from the 80's, featuring the supervillain Arcade. The book is a reprint of an old Byrne/Claremont issue of Uncanny, but I can't recall any specific issue numbers.

Never mind, of course I found it minutes after I posted this.

That's not Arcade, IIRC: in this storyline the X-Men were turned into circus freaks by the hypnotic villain Mesmero, working (I think) at the behest of Magneto, who wanted to humiliate the team before exacting his final horrible revenge.

Mesmero, however, was a green-skinned dude with a green & purple sci-fi costume. Dunno who the carnival barker above is: presumably some human accomplice of his. Wheels within wheels, henchmen for the henchmen.

Whoa! Does that price label really say £52.50?
I'd say Magneto has exacted his revenge on someone's wallet.

Dunno who the carnival barker above is:

That's BANSHEE... then a member of the Uncany X-men.

He's got a SONIC SCREAM mutant power... get it?

Sonic Scream . . . Carnival Barker . . .

Shit. That's appallingly obvious, isn't it, given that, y'know, his face is right there in the team shot at the top left of the cover.

I don't if I'm embarrassed that I didn't know that,or embarrassed that I knew as much about that issue as I did, given that I haven't seen it in, oh, twenty years or more.

You know, that's a really close duplication. Maybe we could sue whoever designed it for copyright violation and give all the money to Dave Cockrum to help with his medical expenses...

that's amazingly silly. Aside fromt he fact that the poster artist probably made like 50$, it's not a copyright violation because he didn't just cut and paste the image, he appropriated it and re-drew it, re-imagined it, etc etc.

Besides, they would get away with the "parody" excuse.
