Grant Morrison will be making an appearance at the forthcoming Comic Festival in Bristol, May 2004, according to the organiser, Kev Sutherland.

Not sure if he will be signing/sketching/appearing on a panel/tap dancing or what, but I'll probably be there.

Ooooh yah! I must say that fills me with a little bit of excitement. I don't think I'm familar with a lot of the other people who will be at the show, but I do appreciate a bit of Grant. Definitely on the lookout for Grant, now. Let's try and find out what he's doing, too, so we can be around... I hope it involves a giant seaguy, and real talking fish.

Is anyone else going to this? Shall we make this a Comic fest thread? Well, a more general one, at least.

Sorry guys, either Kev was misinformed, or he's pissing about:

"Dan, it's bullshit, pure and simple. Can you post around that this is certainly not the case - and has actually caused a few problems as I hear some people booked flights on the back of hearing this news this morning.
How do I know Grant's not going? Plain and simple, he's off to get married in Mauritius, which had been booked for some time, so the posting that Grant was off to Bristol had folk wondering if something was up.

Ah well, that's a pity.

Right. Let's talk Comic Festival!

Dan Fish - @Fish1k
12:45 / 25.05.04
I'll be there, with my brother!

This will be my first Bristol Fest, so take pity if you see me wandering round like a lost lonely clown, and invite me to the bar!

Let me know all the secrets (where the cool people go to drink and eat, etc, etc)

'where the cool people go'

could be you're under a slight misapprehension there...

i'd recommend going to see gary millidge - lovely chap, and he'll say something hilarious like 'gonna have a monthly schedule from now on, honest' and you might get the new strangehaven early. ditto paul grist, his hair's not as funny as millidge's but he'll have some finger puppets or something to give away and maybe a preview of the new kane gn. go to the 2000ad pitch fest as well, guaranteed to come away from that thinking 'shit i thought my future shock ideas were bad...'.

i love going to bristol me. have a nice time, and catch up with sleaze as well cos he's ace.

just recieve Millidge's latest mailing which includes stuff that will be available for Bristol

A quick update prior to the Bristol Comic Festival this weekend: The new issue of Strangehaven will ship to comic stores on June 3rd. The Alan Moore: Portrait of an Extraordinary Gentleman book, which raised almost $37,000 for Alzheimer’s sufferers has been nominated for a Bram Stoker Award, in the “Nonfiction” category.

Finally, two pieces of Festival-related artwork will debut at the Bristol Festival (http://comicfestival.co.uk/). A full-colour gouache painting of Katchoo (from Terry Moore’s Strangers In Paradise) will appear on the new Deck of Cards, and the original art will be auctioned off in aid of ChildLine at this weekend’s event, or if you can’t attend, you can peruse the artwork and e-mail an advance bid on the following website: http://www.mogwog.com/sites/gallery/ I’ve also contributed a single page strip featuring 60s British comic character The Cloak for the “Just 1 Page” magazine, also to be launched at the Festival, this time in aid of the Trinity Hospice charity. You can
bid on the piece by sending an e-mail to just1page@aol.com. Further information, images, links and updates can be found at www.millidge.com Hope to see you this weekend!

I won't be able to go [hahah, there's an ocean of dark waters and poverty between me and UK] but will be featured in JUST ONE PAGE along with Dan and Sleaze; I'm on page 18 with Marcelo Garcia on art for the ST SWITHIN'S DAY homage.

and to those attending, be sure to check out COMMERCIAL SUICIDE, a zine Alex DeCampi is editing with some other folks. it'll contain the ultra-filthy debut of MANGOAT COMMANDO, a 3 pager I wrote with art by the amazing http://irapuan.tk, who's slept a total of 3 hours since last Saturday so we could make it.

[final art is way much better than this rough sketch]

more at http://alexdecampi.com/comics.html

[scroll down for the 17.05.04 entry, but take a look at her other projects, including stuff with Igor Kordey and Felipe Sobreiro.]

enough with the pimping for now.

I'll be there, wearing a T-shirt that says "Ask me about SLAB", so I should be spottable. And as sleaze mentioned in the other thread, I've also contributed to the Just One Page anthology by illustrating his Toy Boy story.

I'll be there too. Trying to punt off a few copies of my wee comic, but mainly looking to have a drink or two with people I don't get to meet otherwise. This year's objective: saying thank you to Rian Hughes.

My comic? It's an anthology of comic strips done for my own amusement, entitled (appropriately enough) STRIP FOR ME. 14 issues so far, with other bits and pieces going on.

No link I'm afraid, but you could ask lentil or sleaze what they thought of the issues they've read.

I'll try and seek out as many of you as I can... is it bad that I'm a little bit nervous? I don't like not knowing what to expect!

Will there be klingons?

sleazenation
21:30 / 27.05.04
Thankfully, there will be no Klingons (The only US con I've been to was Dragon con* which had a very high chainmail bikini quotient) - I've also had a chance to flick through both commercial suicide and the just 1 page anthology already - plenty of fun stuff there...

*I was in Atlanta visiting friends...

Dan Fish - @Fish1k
07:52 / 28.05.04
I've heard DragonCon is just a big fanboy sexual orgy, like a yearly chance to get laid (while dressed as an orc or something).

well, best of luck to those attending, have a nice trip and as many fun as possible!

if you take pics, please post links to them when you're back.

Oh, like you were complaining about the chainmail bikinis and the free party and bottle of champagne I blagged for you at Dragon*Con, sleaze.

Speaking of champagne, someone remind Craig McGill he still owes me a bottle and I won't be there to claim it. If you claim it on my behalf, I shall deny all knowledge and blag another one off him, so have fun... :]

Hey just thinking, at late notice, why doesn't some experienced festival-goer (looking at you, mr. nation) suggest a drinking establishment that can operate as a fall-back (and over) meet spot in case we don't all bump into/ recognise each other during the day(s)?

Failing that, I think each 'lither in attendance should carry a large and obvious prop related to their ficsuit.

And is everyone going for the whole weekend?

(knowing full well that most people on this thread won't look at the board again until after the festivities are over...)

21:28 / 28.05.04
I'm still here! I think sleaze is there already, to my best belief.

I'll look out for somone wearing a Slab t-shirt, and I've got sleaze's number... (unless I lose it).

If it helps, I'll have a gola bag/satchel full of my comics. I will probably be leaving comics near people and then running away. I should be at the "official" party wotsit later on, as well.

I am afraid.

Nobody's going to look now, are they? Ah, well. I have an American Splendour badge on my jacket, as well. I'm grasping. (I don't have a phone.)

I also hear that sleaze has a puppet grafted to one of his arms.

Well, that was good!

It's great to get an impression of how these things work. It all seemed really positive, and it was really pleasing to see people's reaction to my comic! Met loads of people (Chris Staros really is a nice guy, huh?) and spent far too much money (christ, Staros, you take my hard earned cash!) in far too short a space of time.

Amusingly, I accidentally stumbled in to the "House of Ra" and a lady told me she would get my comic in to dentist's waiting rooms. And libraries. I wasn't entirely sure what was happening.

I've already decided that next year I will have my own table, and hopefully it will include a mini-disco.

Really nice meeting all of you, too! I'm sorry I couldn't stay around longer, really, and for any of my nervous social disabilities. It's a pity I couldn't stay for more of the ol' party! (Although on reflection it was probably best for everyone's safety that I drank in moderation.)

Sleaze, I think I saw you at the hypotheticals panel, but by that point I was realising I hadn't eaten all day and slunk out after sitting dreamily for a while!

Sleaze found me, and introduced me to a bunch of people - Hi Sleaze!

I may have met more of you in your civilian guises, apologies if I ignored you!

There are a bunch of pics on Millarworld, including comics folk such as Dave Gibbons, Bob Wayne, Dave Finch and more wearing a hideous orange Mr T Tanktop.

Yeah, that was fun. It was a bewildered but happy lentil that emerged from a crumpled sleep on the last train back to London on Saturday (having lamely declined some very kind offers of sofas/floors to sleep on and allow me to carry on geek-partying the following day).

Good to see again those of you who I've met before (sleaze and Cherry - so brief, alas! next time, next time), and to meet new peeps too. So Suede, you're going to get on the other side of the exhibiting tables? I'm planning to do that at the next opportunity too - in London in the Autumn if they do that again this year. We are the new breed!

Suedey! SHOT FOR MEAT!
00:02 / 03.06.04
Cherry was there? Well blimey, on return, it seems I missed many people!

I didn't stay out partying on the Saturday night, either, but in the hotel lobby the following morning Douglas reliably informed me that he had lost the power of speech, so I'm sure fun was had my all!

I may well have a stand at some point, already I have planned huge cut out figures, disco lights, wine, badges and all out colourful fun. It's possible that none of that will actually happen. My plans to steal a deserted table this time were thwarted by me being too scared.
