Suedey! SHOT FOR MEAT!

I've discovered, somewhat guiltily, that I really do quite enjoy talking about this stuff - so I propose we use this thread for all our discussions on comic art, and techniques and whatnot. Things like "What brush should I use?" "What ink is best?" and many other boringly exciting things (that I hope also interests all of you...) Obviously this includes the discussion of magical pens which make things white.

All the secrets of the art shop, and posing your own art problems to the rest of us to try and work out what to do...

I've got a few problems of my own, which I'll kick things off with...

1. Drawing minorities/Esp. black/asian people in black and white. I've been thinking a lot about the best way to do this, because you don't want to go causing great offense, do you? Indeed, if you're going to do it to so you can try to portray any and all varities and spices of life, you better get it right. But I've been thinking about this, and I can't work out how to do it! I mean, just with black ink, that is. Not without resorting to stereotypes, which has it's place at times... but not to be overused.

I use grey washes in my art, sometimes, which is something I kind of want to avoid with the actual people - but it looks to be the only way right now. Any suggestions? Any comic examples to look at?

In a similar vein, what is the best way to draw a completely black cat?

2. Areas of flat black. How do you approach them? Can you ever get it so that it looks flat on the actual original work? How do you avoid all the mark making strokes, etc? Personally, I tend to alter it a little in photoshop. It works ok, but it's a bit of a compromise in some. But then, I rushed in to it a little and only thought about it after the fact. I did all the flat black with ink/brush, which probably isn't too clever to begin with.

3. Archiving/storing work. How do you do it? Where do all those massive A3 size boards of comic art go? I've got some plastic sleeves in a portfolio with mine in. I've only got about 3 though, and I'm running out. Any ideas? What's the best way to look after them?

And hopefully, that'll get us going on this...
