I don't have a thing

I don't have a thing!

Everyone I know has a thing but I don't have one, I want a thing that can be my own...

What I mean if I have no Mastermind style specialist subject, most people on here seem to have a thing - knowledge of music/comics etc.

I don't have anything! I know little bits about strange things but there's always someone I meet who knows a little more....

Do you have a thing? What's your thing? What should I pick as mine?

I am Henrys Cat

But.. aren't you the world's biggest wrestling fan?

Bear

Nah not even that - I know a little bit about it, more than maybe the casual fan but if I go to a wrestling site I'm pretty much out of my depth....

I have no thing!

You do too have a thing, Bear - wrestlin', if I'm not mistaken. I have a couple of things, some laungished, some new, some borrowed, some blue. The ones percolating at the top of pot at the moment are tantra and reggae/rocksteady. I Ching and Wilhelm Reich follow closely but I haven't picked up anything to do with these for a while.

Yeah Bear - but I feel like that about reggae, just from talking toa feew mates, and about I Ching to be honest. And I'm sure there's a load of little old men sitting crosslegged on the Indian subcontinent who would be able to tell me how fundamentally wrong I am. But I'm getting a lot out of these interests, so there. It ain't what your thing is, it's the way that you do it!

I have a similar problem in that I don't really know anything well enough in depth either, or at least, I don't think I do.

As is the custom with Douglas Coupland fans, people regularly ask what my dream Jeopardy! subjects are. It's supposed to be a list of 7 things that you think you know enough about to be able to answer random questions on (or rather provide the questions to the answers as is the way of Jeopardy!), and I can never think of any. None at all. My dream Jeopardy! list is embarrassingly empty.

Obviously saying this makes me sound like maybe I should add Douglas Coupland to my dream Jeopardy! list, but the truth is, I can't even remember his date of birth accurately.

My thing is ... INSTALLATION TECHNOLOGY. Oh yeah, I am that cool. Or does work stuff not count?

Bear

I think work stuff counts, some people talk in Unix and all that but I don't have a work thing either.

There's always going to be someone out there that knows more I guess.

My thing is that I don't have a thing.

D00d, you should totally find something at work then make it your thing then you will become indispensable and they will have to give you more money and stuff.

Everyone needs something.

Being a Jack of quite a few trades is fairly handy. I was that for a while until I discovered photography. At least no one will pigeon hole you.

Actually I'm blaming Barbelith for this, before finding this site I thought I knew a lot about cult TV/Wrestling and pop music, I even thought I was quite intelligent. I'm suing this place for ruining my preconceived ideas of myself.

You will all be hearing from my lawyer.

I think the court of Barbelith is flooded with similar cases.

I know how you feel, Bear. I don't really have a thing either. But maybe breadth of knowledge counts for a lot as well. Do you have that. Unfortunately, I don't really have breadth or depth, but hey, at least I'm young!

My thing is that I don't have a thing.

Exactly: you have an exciting new obsession. Which I think makes you very special.

Cheers...

I'm going to stay in tonight and make spreadsheet listing all the things that aren't mine..create t-shirts with quirky slogans like "Thing Free" and "Keep your Thing Away from me"

I feel complete now...

Loomis

Let me be your thing Bear! You could devote your life to knowing more than anybody else about Loomis. I can almost guarantee that you will have very little trouble holding on to that particular crown ...

Now your just confusing me.

yeah, but what about when he starts to learn about Lommis's things, eh? To aid his greater understanding of Loomis? Then he's just having "things" sneaked in the back door.

Bear, stick with your minimal approach.
