you knows it...

I've been caning GLC for the last two weeks, although the novelty has now worn off. It's relentlessly offensive, but I can't work out if they're serious or not. Or perhaps they're halfway in between. Whatever, I dare anybody to listen to "Delivery Driver" and not find it draw-dropping funny.

They're fabulous! Now I'm just going to spout some crap that many may think is over-analysing, but I'll go ahead anyway. I just love they way they're subverting this bling cultural medium by the references to clothing from the market and buying packets of 10 fags since they can't afford 20. My favourite song has to be either 'Soap Bar' or 'Half Man/Half Machine'. If you haven't heard them yet please go and have a listen - you're in for a treat!

The modern day equivalent of 'Rat Rapping'.

Is this something I haven't heard of? I can't believe you're talking about Roland...

Yes, Roland Rat released a novelty rap record - he was one of many who did this as hip hop continued to come to a wider audience, because haha hoho this rapping business was hilarious, they didn't even sing, they just talked in rhyme!

I detect a continuity of this attitude in some of the attention and praise Goldie Lookin' Chain have been getting. To claim that they're subverting anything is reaching a little, I think.

Come on - be fair - I did preface my comments by saying that I was over-analysing.

But they are hilariously funny, and also (I feel) make the occasional salient point about politics (cf. 'Guns Don't Kill People, Rappers Do')

because haha hoho this rapping business was hilarious, they didn't even sing, they just talked in rhyme!

Now that just shows that you haven't really listened to them. They are clearly fans of hip hop and aren't trying to rubbish it as an art form. Would you say that by writing a comic poem a writer is undermining the art form?

I'll weigh in here and say that Goldie Lookin' Chain in my opinion are pretty good. There is more to them than a mere comedy schtick (which isn't to say they're not funny, because they are). When you listen to the album the production is pretty good, and the raps, though comedic in tone, show some promise.
I think they might be a bit like the Beastie Boys (lazy comparison I know) in that they release a sophomoric comedy-laced first album and then go on to do better things with their talents. However I could be wrong and they'll just stick to semi-novelty records, which is a shame as I think they've got some real talent.

Flyboy: you have never, in a drunken haze, wanted to start a joke band with mates? Rat Rapping was a fairly cynical record based on a marketable fad (Stock Aitken and Waterman, right?), whereas "Your Mum's Got a Penis" is obviously a load of bollocks someone's thrown together for a laugh. Not that I like GLC (Guns don't... is fucking shit of the lowest order), but I'd say the likes of the Darkness are closer to the spirit of RR than a buch of pissheads with a drum machine.

Do GLC fuck sound like early Beasties. Licence to Ill is a well crafted record and I honestly don't think there's a novelty track on it.

Fuck, I miss early Beasties. We need to bring them forward in time to kill their future selves, like Tony Stark.

I saw them at V festival and it got boring and repetitious very quickly..
I agree I laughed the first time i heard them but when has a comedy band ever lasted?
- or maybe they're destined to be the hip hop half man half biscuit?
It does sadly all feel a bit too novelty and i'm sure they'll be able fill student unions for at least another couple of years, but in terms of if i like it- its starting to grate a little- their shelflife is limited- unless they make a west end musical of twin town...

Nah, Mike Skinner has fresh beats.

I admit his vocals are banal as hell, but his beats redeem it for me.

I think Rat Rapping was the first record I ever bought with the winnings from a Grand National I also got a Spotty (from Superted) PJ's with the money. At least I think I did, I might be way off with the years?

I've only heard Guns Don't Kill people and thought it was awful, but that's possibly due to Chris Moyles loving it so much and even creating his own tribute band, Moldy Looking Stain.

I'll check out the mp3 site when I get home.

The GLC are ace. They're clearly not taking it seriously, the not so subtle references to other rappers "Cyprus Hill told me to make a fucking bong", "I've got twenty-one ounces of blow". And much more deliberately entertaining than The Streets.

Big shout out to DCI Burnside!

Man, nothing wrong with Har-Mar's songs, they're legit electro-funk.

He's only a novelty act if you, you know, look at him.

Your Mother's Got a Penis is to be their next single, which is just fantastic.

T-Shirts down Camden Lock, a Radio ban, lots of Daily Mail headlines, and a guaranteed hit.

Clever bastards, I say.

I had a look at the site in the first post, they get points for C64 loading screen but GTA have already done that... Soapbar seemed quite funny.
