The Goon

I've been pretty addicted to this comic lately and I have been reading the 3 trade paperbacks of it right now. The campy, action and the dumb humor is pretty addictive, and it's one of the few comics out there that'll give you a regular amount of abuse on the homeless and mentally handicapped. Anybody else here a fan?

Good god, yes.

I've laughed my ass off with Every Single Issue.

As a result, I am suing Eric Powell for medical costs plus pain and suffering as my ass must now be surgically reattached and secured with the pins and the bolts and the glaivin and such.

Franky's violent outbursts are hilarious, as is the rampant hobophobia. And the art is just beautiful in spots. I recommend this to nearly everybody. Except for that guy. You know which one....

Frankly I'm bumping this because this need's more discussion. Frankly it's gotten to the point the Goon is only comic I can keep track of.

If ya gonna bump it though, tell us why. Why should I go and buy it NOW?

This book is indeed great, and damn funny. First I heard good things about it from many sources. Then I read an issue in the store to test-drive it out -- the one where the Goon encounters a Lovecraftian sea monster which craves pie. I think the sea monster also wanted to marry the Goon. Something like that. Or maybe it was two stories in one issue. It was zany in the best, non-cheesy sense of the word. It made me laugh out loud. I thought "Hmmm, damn funny book, but I want to scrimp and save now when I think about adding new titles to my list."

Then I did buy the Hellboy/Goon crossover issue cause I figured it's gotta be well worth it. And it was indeed, well worth it. Great stuff. Now I'm thinking about maybe buying a paperback on a rainy day with extra cash -- is there a paperback? I was also just going to the Goon website and learn more about His Gooniness.

I just checked out the website - kinda boring. No fun FAQ for newcomers like me and no summary/info. on the previous Goon comics/appearances. Man, the guy can paint beautifully, though. It's just www.thegoon.com.

Well technicaly, there isn't much other than it's the bizzare adventures of a large thug and his psychotic midget friend. There aren't any multi-issue story arcs either, which makes it easier for new readers.

Just a quick heads-up for anyone who's interested in this, but not reading it yet.

There's a 20cent issue out today. It's a re-print, so not worth buying if you're already a reader. It's a good stand alone issue though, with inflatable chickens and horrific baseball bat violence.

picked it up. Enjoyed it. Love that art but for some reason it just doesn't GRAB me. I'll perhaps pick up a trade when I've got some Spare $$$ but I just don't get that "rush" from reading that comic on wednesdays.

Eric Powell just did a Devil Dinosaur one-shot for Marvel, and I enjoyed the living hell out of it. His take on the Hulk is way sweet. "Hulk like silly caveman hat." Based on that I'm quite intrigued by the just-released Goon Fancy Pants Edition, which apparently chronologically compiles the essential bits of the Goon mythos.

I like the brand of violent/harmless silliness. Has anyone picked it up who can offer some insight?

Yeah the Devil Dinosaur was pretty good. I'm now fishing around for a soft cover GOON should be out there somewhere.
