I would say that if you could do some decent work in Photoshop (color correction, retouching, etc.), you should consider trying to look for work at a photo studio or something similar. Unless, of course, if you're familiar with other design apps, you should look at local design firms and try to get a foot in whether it be production or intern related.
Most of the entry-based competitions or events you could be a part of in the community deal more with notoriety than cash payments. They also have a tendancy to be website designs or concepts to work with. But with a name out there, you do get a good deal of eyes to see your work. I've managed to pull in about 3 clients from being a participant in online magazines and the like.
