Mase Returns
So Mase has come out of retirement. I heard this on the radio today and it really did have me smiling. It's got a "Welcome Back Kotter" sample, and something else from the beginning of an older song which I can't recall. And to hear Mase's voice on the radio again really caught me off guard. It's so reasuring, like he's singing you to sleep while at the same time rapping.
He's straight edge now apparently, and raps about it. He also talks about how the ladies wanna get with him but he doesn't do dirty stuff anymore because he's "a Bad Boy gone clean".
He retired in the 1st place because God told him to stop rapping and become a minister. But it looks like God's decided to let him rap again. Here's the interesting thing. He's going to be a positive, role model for the kids type rapper, but because he's still signed to Bad Boy, and he was something of a hot commodity back in the day, he could be the positive role model rapper who actually gets airplay and video time. I'm interested to see how this plays out.

The video's out now. It's good; Mase does his little slow-mo shuffle kinda dance.

Kanye loves Ma$e!

The Harlem cat features on a remix of 'Jesus Walks', and Kanye West has been quoted as saying that Mase is his favourite rapper of all time. Kinda funny when you think that Kanye is 2004's "mainstream rapper accepted by rock kids" and that Mase was once the embodiment of everything that was (allegedly) wrong with mainstream rap - smooth style, obvious samples, get money, posh parties with Puff, that kinda thing.

posh parties with Puff

Would be a fantastic title for his next record. Or anybody's next record.

I always thought he was lame myself - Puff Diddly's dancing monkey given his own career.

I'm aware of the phrase.

What is it about Ma$e that reminds you of a monkey?

No different than "...R Kelly is in fact physically rather gorilla like", really. Maybe someone can post pics of Ma$e and a monkey side by side to smooth the whole thing over.

What is it about Ma$e that reminds you of a monkey?

i would hazard a guess that it was a comment on his dependance on puff daddy to bestow upon him his status as an entertainer.

like,
duh.

So you're distinctly unimpressed by people saying David Blunkett can't "see" certain truths, but don't think there's anything even slightly potentially dodgy about calling a black artist a "monkey", toksik? Okay...

Char Aina

did i say that?
you asked

What is it about Ma$e that reminds you of a monkey?

and i offered my opinion as to what might have been meant.
i'll admit the 'duh' was unnecessary, but i did feel that it was obvious what comparison was being made.
read what i said.
i didnt say it wasnt dodgy to compare a black man to a monkey, but then you didnt ask that.

as to the other thread... well, thats another thread.
if we must let it spill into here, then yes, i would be unimpressed if a black politician was consistenly referred to by his skin colour, or as a monkey.

where did the 'distinctly' in 'distinctly unimpressed' come from, by the way? as far as i can tell, that was your addition.

one question for you.
why put words in my mouth?

To be honest, I think you're being massively over-sensitive here, Fly. It's clear from the context McG's comment isn't meant as a racist remark so why make out that it is?

"Sensitive"? I'm not being sensitive at all: I'm not crying in the corner like some delicate flower who's been assaulted by an offensive expression. I'm more about kick in the door, waving the 4-4, back like 'Encore', ready for war, you know the routine, kid. I just want MacGyver to explain to me what attributes Mase has that are shared by a monkey, and then we can move on.

Well, to put words into McG's mouth, I think he meant "monkey" in the sense that he's got an organ grinder, Puffy. Pretty obvious to me.

Right. I meant that I found Ma$e's whole career to be the product of Puff Daddy's fame, and that I always found him to be talentless and quite laughable. I do not think he looks like a monkey, I do not think black people look like monkeys, and you're continued probing of the statement is beginning to get on my tits.

well, i'll stick my neck out and say that as far as i can remember mase's rhymes were so bad, betraying such poor imagination and rhythmic flow, that he's like a monkey in the sense of lacking the abstract processing and language skills normally associated wih being a human.

also, according to the limits of my memory and knowledge, mase, after releasing several cash-is-my-god records jacked in the mic to become an evangelical preacher, and is now attempting a return to the hit parade. this suggests to me a lack of moral reasoning that might also be more readily associable with non-domesticated rather than domesticated primates.

Fair enough, MacGyver. I maintain it was a poor choice of words, but I don't really think you're guilty of anything more sinister than that.

Gaimbit - so you're saying he's an untermenschen, ja?

(Okay, okay, I'm kidding...)
