Hiya. I'm working on a little piece of fiction right now and I've reached a block. A character is describing a visit to Tokyo and I've noticed that the meagre information I have (from Lost In Translation and a handful of Takashi Miike movies) isn't going to cut it in the realism stakes. I don't want to spout cliches about Pachinko arcades and teenage girls' panties in vending machines.
So, if anyone here's a Tokyo resident or has spent some time there could I have a little first-hand experience of what it's really like to walk the streets:
>What are the different districts like?
>Where are the good bars? (the faux-hip and shallower the better)
>Where are the good record stores? Are there any chains equivilant to something like Virgin or HMV?
>Finally, how does it feel to walk through Tokyo?

Bumpity-Bump...
(Sorry, but with all this controversy surrounding Rage's post, and the flame-war that ensued, us regular* Barbeloids are getting ignored)

* by 'regular', I mean those who post for information, not to spark up all-out war with a few cut and paste images from Ogrish.com badly inserted into a MSpaint picture and surrounded by a few been-there-done-that musings on Mary-Kate and Ashley.

No personal experience, but I think there's a couple of people who have been to Japan that frequent Barbelith. Check out the Pictures of Yourself thread in the Convo...there was a mini-discussion in the last couple of pages where these people identified themselves (I think Jester was one of them, but don't quote me on that).

You could also check out Lonely Planet's Thorntree forums that deal with North East Asia...the information contained in the Japan posts might give you some pointers.
