Well, gosh. The Hindu Nationalist BJP has thrown in the towel after the Congress party has posted strong results in the early stages of the Indian elections. So, the Congress Party and its allies look like they will be the majority in the government of one of the most populous nations in the world.
The Congress Party's campaigning has majored on the failure of the BJP to take steps to help the rural poor, concentrating instead on consolidating India as a provider of software engineering, leading to massive inequality between the high-tech areas of the cities and the rural areas.
So, what does this mean for India and the rest of the world? What did you think about the wealth-creating (and currency-generating) BJP plan, which set up India as a primary source for "offshoring" - is there a way to maintain these levels of investment incoming from the developed world... and for that matter, is that a desirable route for India to take anyway. What do you think the implications of the Congress Party, and Sonia Gandhi, coming to power are for India-Pakistan relations, Hindu nationalism (Congress Party is secular, yes?), the development of India and other important stuff. Solace my ignorance here, fellows... |
