Shame it didn't come right before Lennie De Ice in your playlist - that would have been a great one-two...

I've used that mix DJing and it does go pretty well (part of the appeal is the trainspotting aspect). Sadly my non virtual copy of 'Yes sir...' seems to gone walkabout at some point in the last couple of months...

You can buy nearly all the Kompakt back catalogue on their website. I'm sorely tempted to order all of the Speicher releases for the trainspotter factor...

ONLY NICE THINGS
17:58 / 07.06.04
Bonnie and Clyde (Bonnie Parker version) – Luna
She Screamed – Ultra Vivid Scene
Pretty Things – The Gentle Waves
Zmeyka – Ladytron
Music is the Victim – Scissor Sisters
Disconnected – Hammell on Trial
Mondo ’77 – Looper
Nothin’ to Do – The Dandy Warhols
Twenty-four hour garage people – Half Man Half Biscuit
The Chosen Few – Olympic Lifts

Oh dear. In my defence, I am currently ripping everything I buy to MP3 and then whacking it onto my PDA, as the only way I ever get to listen to it. I just happen to have found a load of Jeepster stuff inexplicably on sale at a garden fete...

This computer, and hence the MP3s, don't belong to me - they belong to my good friend, Mr. Sam Kant - so I won't even know half the tunes as they come up.

But here goes.

1. Squibb Pharmaceuticals - The New Generation

Hmm. Stupid tune this. Hippy folk tosh:

"We sing of the NEW GENERATION - we hope that you will understaaaaand!"

Nonsense.

2. Drexciya - The Plankton Organisation

Raw, minimal Drexciya fare. Pretty standard, but it bounces along nicely. I met him the other week and he was very nice, so I'm not about to go dissing his tunes now.

Didn't *get* snooker, though.

3. Kentucky Fried Chicken - Using the Star System

Sounds like some weird 70's training thing for KFC. In fact, that's definitely what it is. Shades of the Doublemeat Palace. Dark.

Let's move on:

4. Kernel 32 - Blistera

Moody synth techno. I like this kind of thing. Spacey. Teenage years, summery fields, cool breeze as the evening sets in and LSD. Mmmmmmm. A little whirry and glitchy and there's some mashed up vocals a la Prefuse 73. Nothing spectacular (in fact, preeeetty average all over, really) but very nice.

4. State Ensemble of Jewish Folk - Jewish Dance

I like it, but I'm not sure I'm in a position to comment. Kant's got so much folk shit lying around on his computer - could fix up a brilliant crash course in "world" stuff. Maybe get to the point where I could ditch that lazy, awful term altogether. I know he's got that in mind...... Anyway, I expect everyone's having a wonderful time at the dance.

5. Farben - IQ/Tell

Gentle techno noodlings. Soft plopping sounds. Deep, well-like....Suddenly it's done.... That was quick.

6. Harry Partch - Wind Song

Experimental fun by a guy many of you know better than me. Sounds almost oriental. Plinkety plonk....DONK! plink plink....DONK! Expect he's playing his own dog's arse or somesuch weird thing.

Anyway: pleasure, but goes on a bit.

7. Nasty Crew - Hold it Down

Dirty, dirty grime. Shite production values. Fucking lovely toasting. Rough. Kant finally embarked on Garage-quest t'other week and gave me the lowdown on this shit a couple of days before the OM article. Talk about "steam engine time".... So excited that this shit finally represents a forum/context for british hip-hop.

8. Endymion - Anger

Hard techno stomper, sampling what sounds like Old Dirty Bastard. I reckon it's gonna gabberise any minute now..... And sure enough! Shit! It's fucking amazing! Not for Barbelith's pop pussies. I cannot tell you how much I dig this kind of thing. Why am I getting into all the noisy, boisterous stuff as I get older?

9. Triosk meets Jan Jelinek - Distant Shore

Now, Jan Jelinek is the sort of artist some of my friends know loads about, whereas I know sod all. Nice, short, but sweet soundscape. Nothing to rave about, but 's certainly piqued my interest. Late night stonage, ahoy!

10. Jon Larsen Trio - Hot Licks

A nice gentle ending. Wouldn't be out of place on an ad for Thomas Cook, but basically some very nice guitar picking reminiscent of Django Rheinhardt. Perhaps a little too clean and polished sounding.

Gee. That was fun. Think I might go another round. There's millions of fucking MP3s in here.

And again.

1. The Skatalites - Lucky Seven

I'm never sure how much i like ska. Mento, calypso, reggae, dub, dancehall, they're all great - but ska? Always sounds like weird, hyperactive pogoing to me. Having said that, though, this tune does have a nice "jump up!" thing going for it. Feel I should get to know it better. Touch arses - that kind of thing.

2. Koji Kondo - Zora's Domain

Zora has to be some character in some piece of anime somewhere. This is the really mawkish bit, where all the trees have miraculously begun to bloom and the fish have returned to the river after all the demon raping and uber-violence is over and done with. You can practically hear the children giggling. Or maybe I'm just talking shit. Whatever. This should be on the soundtrack to something.

3. Basin St. Blues

Sax in the city. Sultry nights. Midnight calling.

Cliched but lovely. Nothing can go *wrong* while this music's playing....

4. The Fall - (unknown)

Some fun computer noises in the backgound. Sounds like pong. Always takes a bit of time for Mark E's stuff to grow on me, but this sounds cool. Growling poet, pong and spiky guitars: lets go!

5. Pierre Henri and Pierre Schaeffer - Prosopop 2

Barely listening. Skinning up.

6. AC/DC - What Do You Do For Money, Honey?

Aaah, it had to come. Rock Beauty. There's toooo much of this shit on here, but once in a while this kind of thing rocks the marriage. Like now. "Generic"? Read: "Ultimate Classic Extreme DVD!" Like Fraely says:

"What an incredible voice. I'd love to meet someone who speaks like that!"

7. Assassin and Capleton - The Plan Dub (acapella)

They sound like hard cunce. Their voices alone make me want to throw shapes.

Don' Tes'.

8. Django Reinhardt - The Sheik of Araby

Speak his name and he shall appear!

I want a river-boat.

NOW!!!

This music could only be truly appreciated on a river-boat.

9. Lightning Bolt - Saint Jacques

No, I didn't plonk this one on just to look cool. What can I say?

Rock!!!

Rock!!!!!!!

Buriburidas!*

10. Sun City Girls - Persistence of Vision

More laid back jazz, but this time with poetry. More educated people would probably recongnise the guy's voice. Does make want to go on about "Jazzzz.... Nice....", though.

And I know that's apalling of me.

I expect I'll have another crack on this'n later.

*shout out to Shige.

I downloaded that same Vitalic live set. Found it kinda disappointing. I guess the trouble is that the Poney ep is just too perfect and it's hard for him to live up to it...
