I have just read the 16 page adobe version of this on the DC / Vertigo site Here, has anybody around here bought this baby? The art looks great, and the concept seems somewhat interesting, but 'tis a lot to shell out for "somewhat interesting."

This seems really interesting -- I'm basically going to wait til I've heard more about it (already heard several good reviews so far, it's basically an autobio story about Seagle's life, about him being approached to write Superman and what that was like for him, what he thinks of the character, etc. - very meta-textual). I'm sure Kristiansen's art is great. I'll wait for paperback, maybe.

yeah, look, seriously, i find the title of this thread offensive in the extreme. not that i expect much else from steven 'i'm just a cook' seagle. can a 'mod' change it to something less blatantly sexist please?

Ah..across the pond (I am Canadian) Bird=Female right? My humble apologies for any offense generated, I meant none.

I don't get it... how is this sexist? He's quoting the title of the book. I know "bird" is british slang, but I don't see how that's relevant at all.

Either the poster who said it was sexist was kidding or is just really confused and misinformed. This is the actual title of the graphic novel.

Don't panic. The kids like to hang around here making jokes. Gambit doesn't actually believe that the writer Steven Seagle starred in Under Siege. He is mocking you. You are being mocked.

Which is a shame because its seen the demise of: "Its a bird" - good or guano? which I was quite proud of as a suggested edit to; "Its a bird" - very good or a big turd?

Newsarama today has an article on tons of mainstream positive reviews for this...

but is it any good?

Zactly.

I thought only the first story in Endless Nights was good and it was supposed the best thing comics had ever done. A lot of these "critically acclaimed" comics seem to be read by reviewers who haven't read a lot of good comics.

I read Grant M's giving a thumbs up somewhere.

Really interested but I won't be risking/spending 25$ on a book by Seagle who can be terrific on occasion.

Yeah, I'm prolly gonna wait for the softcover version I think. (Damn shrink-wrapped hardcovers).

I got this out of the library, and it's great.
A bit like a comic book version of Adaptation, with a bit of American Splendour thrown in, glowing recommendation from some 'G. Morrison' chap on the flap, great view of Supes ('Kryptonite? Way to backtrack on an invincible character- what are the chances of a bit of radioactive Krypton shoting light years and *just happening* to land on Earth?' etc.).
It's mostly about Huntingtons and family secrets surprisingly, and I don't usually like stories about writers agonising about stories, but it gets a thumbs up from me- I stayed up 'til 3am to finish it *yawn* because it was so well written. Beautifuuly drawn in 21 distinct styles too.

I read a bit of the preview of this.

You know when they slap those traditional comic book style computer letters over the top of painted art? That's the worst thing in comics, that is.

I highly recommend it.
