Looking up the whole 2012 thing online and found this interesting article.

"A prolonged period of change is on the horizon that will be ushered in by the 2004 – 2012 ‘passage’."

I'm now watching current events with a whole new perspective, bring it on!

Hey nice one! I clicked on this link at the bottom of the page and it says this too :

Transits of Venus across the disk of the Sun are among the rarest of planetary alignments. Indeed, only six such events have occurred since the invention of the telescope (1631, 1639, 1761, 1769, 1874 and 1882). The next two transits of Venus will occur on 2004 June 08 and 2012 June 06.

Maybe something will happen on June 08th?

If it's a transit of Venus on June 8, 2004, maybe those of us who are single should do some major love-attracting spells on that day...

This sounds really cool, though. This year begins the phase that will be completed in the infamous 2012...

Yes. I particularly liked the statement in the first page: We suggest that all newcomers to our site continue from here with the 'Books online & to order' on the menu above.

Seriously, I really hope so. I lived through the new age movement and all of that age of aquarius stuff, followed by the decade of greed. Nothing lets down like a let-down.

Not at all! Just a bit weary. When you've seen one hopeful movement after another fail, while various situations continue to get worse, you tend to get a bit cynical.I really hope that things will change, but I'm not holding my breath. I've turned blue to many times........

Actually I do see your point, but I'm working on losing my cynicism at the moment. It's become a bad habit

damn, I hope 2012 doesn't turn out to be shit.. and, people, whatever happens on June 8th, let's not take it as a sign of the end of times..unless it's a groundbreaking scientific discovery (time machine Go!!)...politics and war don't make me think of armaggeddon no more. Too much shit has hit the fan already and it just keeps coming.

the only things that come to my mind with the June date is possible elections in the UK and the transference of power in Iraq.

But they are the two most obvious things I guess.

CNN has an article on the Venus transit June 8 today. And I just saw something about a new comic with a heroine called Aphrodite. Seems the Goddess of Love is trying to get my attention...

I hope something love-related happens to me on June 8... I turn 24 on June 17 and I made a goal for myself to lose my virginity when I was 23.:\

I'm not getting excited about this though. last time someone talked like this was last May, and they convinced me reptilian spirits were going to invade earth on May 2. Or May 3. Or May 5. I forget. Either way, I was a gullible fool.

Or maybe they did invade, and you just didn't notice! Have you been drinking your milk? There's a good lad. No need to worry yourself, people disappear all the time.

I'm not too sure about the whole 2012 thing it seems like a possible case of mass delusion and hysteria to me. I don't think the Mayan priesthood could visualise life existing for them then. I mean what I am interested in is what happened to the Mayans as a race? We are surrounded by earth changes all the time. Gives people a little bit of fear doesn't it. The extreme xtians had 2000 Millenium Bug Fever whilst clutching onto hordes of baked beans and milk powder, and the New Agers will clutch onto their hordes of organic sugar free beans and soya milk powder. I dunno - smatterings of eschatological survivalism, flight or fight paranoias.

The whole point of the Mayan thing is that it's a positive change, or at least that's what I've gathered from Grant Morrison's take on it.

"Oh yeah, you know, the last issue of The Invisibles is actually written as a comic from 2012, and it's supposed to be, it's written for kids who are now about nine or so, who are actually part of the next sunspot cycle, the ones that are going to be taking us into 2012, and they'll be like hippies, or their version of whatever hippie is. That current'll be back in again, and I wrote that issue for them because they'll completely understand it, but their bigger brothers might not completely understand it."

Having gone through all that nuclear apocalypse fear as a young girl I welcome any positive takes on possible world changing events.

Something to look out for tonight culled from the BBC.

And I quote:
there is a daytime event on the 21st in which Venus is covered by the Moon. (This is known as occultation). (my emphasis).

And apparently seven hours after occultation we'll be able to see the 2 day-old crescent Moon just above Venus.

Strange potents and words coming to us today my friends, oh yes.

Federal election in Canada June 28. The election can be seen as a 'rehersal' for the American one in November (look it up if you're interested).

Just something in June. I happen to live in one of the few places, other than the remote Pacific ocean, where the transit is not visible. I'll have to dream it.

Well, the Mayans were certainly an exceptional race. Their calendar was as accurate as the Gregorian without having any real astronomical instruments. Note also that when T. McKenna created his TimeWave program utilizing sequences of the I-Ching to track the ingression of novelty, it crashed at the exact same date as the Mayan omega point. At the time, he was unaware that the Mayans had ever made such a prediction.

Many mythologies seem to feature an apocalyptic or transformational event that will occur at the "end of history". Perhaps this may simply be the archetype of death & resurrection informing myth, or perhaps it is an intuitive understanding of a radically transformational event looming on the horizon.

Quoting McKenna on the Singularity:

"History is a kind of indicator of the nearby presence of a transcendental object. And as we approach the transcendental object, history will become more and more hallucinatory, more and more dreamlike, more and more surreal--does this sound familiar to you? It's the neighborhood, right? [laughter] That's because we are so close now to this transcendental object, that is the inspiration for religion and vision and revelation, that all you have to do to connect up to it is close your eyes, smoke a bomber, take five grams of mushrooms in silent darkness, and the veil will be lifted, and you seen, then, the plan. You see what all these historical vectors have been pointing towards. You see the transcendental object at the end of time--a cross between your own soul and the flying saucer of cheap science fiction. I mean--the city of Revelations, hanging at the end of the Twentieth Century like a beacon. I really think that this is happening, and that what the-- It's as though we are boring through a mountain, towards someone else who is boring through that mountain, and there will be a handshake at a certain point in time. We are moving, literally, into the realm of the imagination. This is where the human future lies."

I got some spam about the Venus transit from Astrology.com, not that I hold Astrology.com in high esteem for their insight, but it tickled me to hear about it in spam.
Here's what they have to say about it-

"Get ready for an extremely special, very rare astronomical event: On Tuesday, June 8, the silhouette of Venus will cross the disc of the Sun. It's like an extraordinary kind of eclipse -- the last time it happened was in 1882. This much-anticipated transit will be best seen (with special eye protection -- don't stare into the Sun without it!) from Europe, Africa and Asia, but it'll be visible in its final stages from the eastern United States and Canada. Wherever you are, check out a live webcast; this kind of Venus transit won't happen again until 2012, and after that not until 2117.

Astrologically speaking, this rarity has some amazing implications. The life-giving Sun represents consciousness, while Venus symbolizes the feminine -- the power of love, relating and consensus; the principles of diplomacy and protocol; artistic endeavors; and (last but not least!) money or value. With Venus so tightly aligned with the Sun, these ideas are likely to be very much in the zeitgeist. Look for women of power (Condoleezza Rice, Martha Stewart or Hillary Clinton, perhaps) to be in the news -- or issues of women's power. Important partnerships may be announced in the financial world, or a milestone in world currency, or news about conduct or propriety. Venus is a lover, not a fighter, so this transit could also be promising in terms of a worldwide peace movement.

On a personal level, relationships may be profoundly influenced, so be mindful about matters of the heart -- be sure to balance the give-and-take. Bear in mind, too, that Venus is retrograde during this period, so things may be going on beneath the surface in the love and relating department. This may not be the best time to make permanent decisions about partnerships (though you may be tempted to!). For best results, keep the lines of communication -- and your heart -- wide open."

Hehe I love the sillyness of pop astrology.

Here's another wacky article: Venus & the postal service?

That said, I have faith. On the day I was born, Venus was behind the sun, ie: my Sun sign is the same sign I have Venus in, Aquarius. Wonder how this will effect me.

Also, "Venus is a lover, not a fighter." Shyeah, riiiight. Tell that to Inanna.

Hey it was worth it, i found their site that they put up at the end and went to it, which then lead me to a site where you can view the images that a group of observatories get as it happens, here's the sites :

Open2.net (the programme's site)

SunEarth

You can actually see it yourself too if you have the right eye protection, something i'd love to do if i can get some and the skies are clear.

I wonder if John Philip was into the astrological aspects of this or just the 'ooh ahh' scientific?
