I put a spell on you

Thought I should mention, I’m doing a talk on hoodoo, rootwork and related folk magic stuff on Monday night (10th May) at the South East London Folklore Society (SELFS), which happens at a pub in Greenwich called The Mitre.

The talk is called ‘I put a spell on you’ and looks at the history and development of hoodoo practice, along with some stuff about my own experiences of working with it, and why I think it’s relevant to contemporary occultism.

If you’re in London on Monday night and fancy a beer and listening to me gabble on about the mysteries of banishing aerosol spray, ‘all night long’ anointing oil, and double action reversible jinx candles - and how they can help YOU, then come along. I’ll be the slightly embarrassed skinhead in brown pinstripes.

Details of how to get there are here:

The Mitre Tavern, 291 Greenwich High Road, London SE10 8NA. Talks start at 8.00pm and cost £2.50/£1.50.
Greenwich Mainline & DLR: Turn left from the main exit, walk about 5 minutes and the Mitre is on your left opposite the Ibis Hotel and is next to St Alfeges Church. Buses: 177, 180, 188, 199, 286, 386.

Dude. I beg you, please get someone with a camcorder to video you doing this talk. Then any number of interested people who can’t make it on the night could post a videotape around the world, from lither to lither.

Failing that, have a really good time with this tonight. Knock ‘em bandy.

Knock 'em dead, you impeccably well dressed Mr Lantern. Recording the talk would be fantastic.

this sounds fantastic - best of luck, Gypsy, I'm sure you'll do great! Wish I could be there, but alas, as I'm in NYC, this is not to be.

So, Gypsy: How'd it go??

Do tell.

It went alright, I think. First time I've done a talk in ages. Not really sure if I like it or not, or if it's the sort of thing I should be doing... Dunno. A lot of the stuff I do magically seems to be a bit disconnected from the general chaos / western trad approach to things, which is alright and (hopefully) makes for some interesting threads on here, but I have my qualms about talking about the stuff I'm interested in in such a public way... I'm not sure if I should be doing that. Maybe to some extent, but I like to be a bit circumspect about stuff. Contents of it will at some point make it into something I write at some point though.

"Dem a loot, dem a shoot, dem a wail....shanty town!"

What were the crowd like? I used to go to SELFs occassionally, but haven't been for a while now.

Crowd was alright, the usual mixed bag of regulars and the curious who turn up at these things. It seems to attract more people now it's moved to Greenwich than it did when it was in Charlton. The feedback I got was quite good, a couple of people said it was refreshing to hear someone talking about actually doing stuff and the machanics of sorcery, rather than just theorising and quoting from books they've read. Which was a nice little compliment. I've been asked to do the talk again for Steve Wilson's moot with no name event sometime during the summer, which tends to attract a different crowd. So I might do more stuff like this, it's all a bit odd though.

Don't suppose you'd consider bunging a transcript or something online? I'd really like to read it.

I'm giving this talk again next month at Steve Wilson's "M**t with no name" (I hate the M word and won't even type it) on August 4th. It takes place upstairs in The Devereaux pub. This pub is a bit of a tricky fucker to find. It's in Devereaux Court, which is a little side street that leads off The Strand. More or less at the exact point where The Strand meet Fleet Street. The side street is next to a pub called The George, more or less directly opposite the Law Courts. If you're about, come along and listen to me talk about mojo bags, espiritismo, city drifts and hoodoo docs.

First half of the talk is about the history and development of hoodoo, second half is about my own experiences working with it. It'll be a bit different from the last version I gave as I plan on expanding the second half of the talk a bit further and covering more ground. It starts about 7:30pm I think. Drop me a PM if you want more details.

I'll come along as I'm not quite sure what you get up too with hoodoo.

Also at various points during your talk I'll stand up and chant Holy Shit, Holy Shit!

'Also at various points during your talk I'll stand up and chant Holy Shit, Holy Shit! '

That made me piss myself laughing.

I'll try and make it and stand up and punch the air with a WHOO!! every time Bear shouts out.

Will you be bringing placards with stuff written on them, like they do in the wrestling?

Possibly running in halfway through and attacking me with a steel chair.

"Somebody get some help out here!"

Well, I still have that whole "Atlantic Ocean" thing standing in my way ("a warrior sees no obstacles, only challenges" my arse!), but I'd still love to see the write-up when you do one.

Best!

A transcript, perhaps? A downloadable PDF? Please?

Yeah, since you're doing it again at Steve Wilson's do -- when are you going to announce that properly? -- you could send the notes for the last one ahead of time.

That way we can either

a) read the text out IN PERFECT SYNCHRONISATION with what you say, creating the mystifying effect of half the audience apparently having come under your sinister spell

or

b) do loads of reading on each of the points you make and DENOUNCE IN YOU IN THE FOULEST POSSIBLE TERMS at each point you make, with copious references to obscure academic tracts to demonstrate the parlous state of your scholarship.

or

c) contribute startling performance art pieces at key points of the presentation, using mime and action painting to reinforce your argument and POSITIONING YOU AS A MAGUS OF THE NEW AEON.

Your choice.

Should we bring biscuits?

What about some buns?

I also got the update from Phil Hine's site, but my computer at home is going to die within a few days (maybe less) and I don't want to burden it during these final hours. I will definitely check out the transcript when the new hard drive is up and running. Thanks for putting it online, Gypsy.
