Just had my first couple of listens to "Trampin'". Thus far, I'm enthralled.
Initial impressions: the two "setpieces", "Gandhi" and "Radio Baghdad" are kind of epic builds in the style of "Gung Ho". The track "Trampin'" itself is also good, but strangely seems to be following something I've noticed (or imagined) recently... close your MENTALIST album with a nice gospelly piece. Honestly, they're all at it... Primal Scream, New Order... (I won't say Cave cos he's been doing it for years).
Overall, I'm thinking this is a great album. All the reviews I've read, however, all written by people who are self-confessed fans, seem to think it falls short.
I dunno. Patti always takes me a few listens to really grab me by the heart, soul and balls (and the only song of hers I still genuinely don't like is "New Party" from "Gung Ho"), but I kind of think that's happening already with this one.
What does anyone else think? |
