The two latest Eightballs were great, I highly recommend them. Also, Local is really good, Sharknife is probably the coolest thing you will see in a while, and anything by Thomas Ott will freak you out, guarnateed.

PCK, I appreciate that you're new to the 'lith so I'm going to say this nicely. Lists, i.e. posts where titles are vomited forth without any explanation, are not well loved around these parts. They contribute nothing of substance and drag down the quality of discussion on the board. Try for a little more content in future.

Heat, I see you've been a member for a few years now - you really should know better.

I just picked up an issue of Action Philosophers, and that was great. It had cute black and white stories that combined funny anecdotes with sketches of the philosophies of Wittgenstein, Thomas Aquinas and Kierkergaard. It kind of reminded me of those annoying 'Derrida (etc.) for Beginners' books they flog to naive undergrads, except AP is actually funny and - as far as I can tell - kinda insightful.

It's the biography of a girl growing up in Iran at the time of the revolution and it's actually quite funny as we see little Marji attemting to convince the guardians of the revolution that her michael jackson badge is actually a picture of Malcom X, a leader of muslims in America.

It's also quite dark as we see what started as a popular uprising, and one with a leftist bent, turn into a religious revolution...

And it gets more interesting as you begin to realise more about Marji's background in an educated, western left-leaning family...

Thanks heaps for that recommendation - I picked it up yesterday and it's fantastic. I cried like a baby! Anyone who hasn't read Persepolis, you should really pick it up. The main character is a kid who's around ten at the time of the revolution, and it makes for a great read if you don't know much about Iranian history - because she doesn't either, and you learn with her. The first volume's arc, from elation as the Shah's regime comes to an end through the growing paranoia and return of repression under the fundamentalists, is harrowing and sweet and often hilarious.

Glad you enjoyed it Jackie - there's a thread on the book here That I'd love to see revived if you've got anything to add... I love Satrapi's work and have just scored ticket for her first appearence in the UK for the launch of the English translation of her latest book Chicken with Plums.

And on further recommendations - Jackie, have you read Fun Home yet? It's Alison (Dykes to watch out for) Bechdel's sort of autobiography/ coming out story... It's a really interesting books that I find slightly problematic... I think you may well like it and would appreciate any perspectives you have on it... I'm particularly keen to talk about how Bechdel represent's her father...
