Exiles #46 - Guest-starring Beak

4-page preview here, featuring Beak, Angel and the kids, and all that's left of Xorn (!).

Though the solicitation doesn't actually say so, I recall reading somewhere that surprise character from the regular Marvel Universe would be joining the cast this issue. I'd hate to see Beak join the Exiles only to dissappear forever when the title inevitably loses steam and gets cancelled...

It looks cute. I like Beak and Angel living in a little shack above the X-mansion, getting fat and raising their babies on pancakes.

I don't know you can take them from there, but I'll probably pick it up until it annoys me.

Who else is in Exiles?

I hope they don't go dimension hopping with the Exiles where they're doomed to be killed off or disappear. For some reason seeing Beak team up with Hyperion just doesn't seem right...

The Fantastic Four are solicited as being guest-stars... how that works I've no idea.
Don't like the Shanghai-ing of Beak either. It won't make Exiles a good comic again.

Popcultureshock has a cute scan from later in the issue, of Beak wearing the Xorn helmet. Of course, it won't fit over his freakish bird-head, but that's what makes it so cool.

Plus, he used the phrase "my babies' momma". Nice.

Who else is in Exiles?

Well, Exiles is basically the TV series Sliders, but with mutants. As such, the team is composed of alternate universe versions of various X-characters who've been picked up along the way as the team flits across the multiverse. I haven't read it recently enough to know who's on the team now--the roster changes pretty continuously. If I'm not mistaken, this will be their first visit to the regular Marvel Universe, and if they take poor Beakie with them when they leave, he'll likely never be seen in non-Exiles continuity again...

ONLY NICE THINGS

I am deeply ashamed to say that I read the Exiles. I have no idea why I do, and it is precisely the kind of consumption of comics that I would excoriate in mere mortals. I think it is the Quantum Leapiness of it, and the "What if" quality - you know, a world where the phalanx took over, a world where Phoenix goes hardcore on the moon, a world without shrimp...

Anyway, the summary above is substantially correct. The current lineup, after a bit of a bloodbath last issue, is Morph (a version of the AoA Morph, but from a *nice* universe), Mimic, a female Sasquatch, Nightcrawler's daughter, the AoA Blink...

The Exiles have popped up in the mainstream Marvel Universe once before, and encountered the Uncanny X-Men. It was a bit shit. Everyone had pointy noses. You know the drill.

It is a new writer.

He's much-touted in circles you don't move in.

The dinnertable moment is beautiful; don't like the praying that preempts it so much. Industro-punk lovin' Beak does not rock a prayer before eating.

I notice here that Beak's dialogue is going more American-standard, which seems to me a shame. Morrison seemed to take a lot of care to make him sound like an Amsterdam kid--while probably-not-coincidentally doing the same with Anders Klimakks over in the Filth.

Question for anyone who's actually Dutch; was Morrison's dialogue style for Beak and Anders fairly realistic? I bought it, but then I'm not surrounded by English-speaking Dutchmen on a daily basis, oddly enough.

Oddly enough, Beak's dialogue in his first appearance seemed "normal" (ie American) to me. It seemed like he started having trouble with English when he resurfaced during "Imperial".

I wonder if his sudden speaking change -- and now his change back -- came about because Cassie Nova smashed up a lot of stuff inside his head? Stuff which finally healed?

Or Morrison realised he wasn't writing Beak's dialog properly changed it for Imperial and now the new guy isn't writing his dialog the same way.

Or, we could just cover the mistakes by making stuff up. Whatever.

Well -- yeah. I thought it was pretty obvious I was doing that. No love for the old-school No-Prize mindset?

Ohhh...

Well it's clear then that Dutch-speaking Beak has been with the Exiles since Planet X and they've come to swap him back with the Americanised stand-in from Earth-531.

YES! That's the stuff!

Beak was possessed by his own Mummudrai, I tell you!

Well, Beak is supposed to be straight edge isn't he, the rate those kids are growing they'll be collecting their pensions when Beak and Angel are celebrating their tenth anniversary. If those kids are growing up so fast shouldn't either Beak or Angel be aging at a noticeably fast rate too?

And I must admit that I don't think I noticed that Beak wasn't American...

I just got the full issue of this yesterday. As far as X-comics goes its pretty good. I'm glad Beak and them are still around, and I was surprised by how happy I was to see Blink there.

The best thing about this issue though is that it's brining back all my hopes of Xorn being real and making a come back, which i'd let die after the end of New X-Men. I figured if Xorn did come back it'd be written by chuck austen or somebody crap like that. I could see this guy making it cool though.

Probably a weird place to post this but I wasn't sure if it merited its own thread, and this seemed to be the last thread with the Beak Love...

*spoilers for NEW WARRIORS #1*

Seems that the handsome *grumble* and unpowered (M-Day victim) Barnell Bohusk is one of the New Warriors.

One the one hand, I hate how he got de-powered, on the other hand I *heart* Beak.

yeah, I flipped through this at the store and it was so odd to see a de-Beaked Beak. really doesn't work without the Beakness, does it?

I don't know... it does and it doesn't. Given the state of the Marvel U, a "powerless" Beak stepping up and being a terrorist/superhero? I dig that.

The "handsome Beak" thing itself? Not such much a fan, but given that mutants aren't even a metaphor (or even very interesting) in the MU any more, I appreciate the usage of the character in a spotlight book in an intelligent and interesting fashion.
