Emoticons

I'm fairly sure I'm just being blind and/or stupid, but I've checked the wiki and the site's search function but I can't find out how to do emoticons. Anyone care to link to the thread (which I'm sure must exist) that tells me how.
P.S I know emoticons are lazy, but they do enable you to make clear your intent without being overly verbose (like I am being now for example).

Don't.

Seriously, don't. Emoticons are a very easy way to show the world that you are a complete cocking idiot. They clutter up the board and they would make A Brief History of Time look like the cretinous droolings of a Major Morgan gone mental.

No. Ack. Emoticons must die. I mean, why use them at all? They are indeed the refuge of the idjit.

Which, incidentally, is the answer to your question. Barbelith has an "art" folder containing a load of smileys. There may be a list around here somewhere, but alternatively just right-click on somebody else's usage and find the file name there. Then link to it as you would any other image.

There were UBB shortcuts - and the like. Not sure if they still work. Let's find out.

Oh yes. They do. So use a colon, then the name of the smiley you want to use, then another colon. No spaces. Thus, with  I can express that the previous person's post was really *stooopid*, and stooopid in a very obvious way that just happens to be beyond my ability to explain.

Whoopie mcshit.

I wish there was an emoticon for "whoopie mcshit".

Actually, no, I don't. I like the words better.

I hate smileys. I HATE THEM. I can't believe Cal built them into the board the first run around. I wanted to kill him.

Well... I don't like them either. But really - if we want this board to be for more than four uptight people, perhaps we need to lighten up a bit, yah? Otherwise why not just email one another about how crap the world is?

People like emoticons. People find it easier to express themselves with them - so why the hell not?

How about because they are lazy shorthand, all too often used by those who have trouble communicating effectively as a means to say what they mean but with an added element of plausible deniability (hey it was a joke!!!)

Now should I put a smiley here to indicate that there is some small element of humour implied in my overblown attack on emoticons, even though it does substantially represent my distaste for emoticons?

Right, firstly, thank you for answering my question. Now as for the advantages and disadvantages of emoticons. I agree with those who think emoticons are poor form, lazy and generally a bad thing; too often they are used instead of a proper, considered response, or to evade any criticism of a post. I personally would be loathe to use them in any serious discussion.
However, in a jovial, frivolous thread, I feel they can serve a purpose, in that they do enable you to make it absolutely clear, in a very easy and brief manner the tone of your comment.
And anyway, whatever your opinion on emoticons surely you would rather they were done correctly, rather than in a half-arsed manner?
P.S apologies for any mistakes in grammar or spelling, I am somewhat the worse for wear.

The main problem with emoticons on Barbelith, both in its previous incarnation and as it is now, is that the ones we have simply don't fit in with the rest of the design. IMO blah.

Tom, would you be up for people designing some new ones? OR, failing that, people finding a set from somewhere else that aren't so obviously a hangover from our UBB days?

Absolutely! The emoticons on barbelith are bloody horrible and if people could design ones that fitted in with the design more then I'd swap to using them immediately!

Some form of translucent line-art is called for then, 'cause the rainbow makes colour co-ordination somewhat difficult. This merits thinking about...

Well, if we're going to have them, make sure we have a whoopie mcshit one.

I use Mysmilies.com.

Another go. What do you reckon? Yours if you want them, to keep as they are or to develop/cite as a poor example.

I do that and I don't see a problem with it. Sometimes you can't convey your tone of voice textually so you have to use a smiley. I like them within reason (but only about once every 3 weeks).

I think English, especially British English, can need a helping hand when it collides with the informal language of the web. Now and again doesn't hurt, does it?

Is there one for earcocking or would that be inappropriate. If it is then I vote for asscandling. in fact those should be the only emoticons ever.

I doodled some that look a bit like space hoppers last night, but I haven't seen what they look like when reduced.

I'm having a hard time thinking of appropriate smileys for Barbelith anyway. Some more abstract mood icons would be better, but people might get confused if what they thought would turn out as became a swirly pink bubble with a parachute. Or something.

Grey Area started this thread over in the Creation, smileys, designing, for the use of. You might get more feedback there.

I like ERD's smileys in themselves, they look all chubby and cute, but I think the square ones sit better with the current Look and Feel of the board. Perhaps transparent white smileys, to go with the white forum titles on the front page...? The outlines'd have to be bolder, I guess.

Actually, I prefer the purely ascii variety myself when I use them. I'm old skool that way, I guess. But really, if you want emoticons that don't interfere with the decor, that's the way to go. Just loose the graphics. If people want to use 'em, they will and will be intelligable enough.

Though I do like the transparant line art ones. Nice work, that.

White is cool but does it show up well?

Actually, I think white might look nicely understated. Be right back.
