Flying Saucer Fever Grips Iran, Theories Abound

Wed Apr 28,12:55 PM ET

By Christian Oliver

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Is Iran about to be invaded by little green men or are the Americans racing through the night sky in spaceships to spy on the Islamic Republic?

Flying saucer fever has gripped Iran after dozens of sightings in the last few days. Fanciful cartoons of alien spacecraft have adorned the front pages.

State television on Wednesday showed a sparkling white disc it said was filmed over Tehran on Tuesday night.

More colorful Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) have been spotted beaming out green, red, blue and purple rays over the northern cities of Tabriz and Ardebil and in the Caspian Sea province of Golestan, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Newspapers and agencies reported people rushing out into the streets in eight towns on Tuesday night to watch a bright extraterrestrial light dipping in and out of the clouds.

An airforce officer in the Revolutionary Guards was quoted in the reformist Vagha-ye Etefaghiyeh daily saying Iran's Supreme National Security Council should investigate whether these visitors from afar had hostile intent.

But Sa'dollah Nasiri-Qeydari, head of the Astronomical Society of Iran, told Reuters the stories were unfounded.

"In my opinion, flying saucers do not exist," he said, insisting his telescopes would have picked up invaders from outer space.

"The people who have seen these things are not experts - farmers, villagers and pilots," he added.

He said what people reported was consistent with the planet Venus, whose intense light in its current position would be given different hues by being filtered through the atmosphere.

Funny how he dismisses pilots as not being experts in flying objects...

This is pretty cool, though.

I can't believe no one replied to my post, but here's even more mainstream UFO sightings: this one is on the front page of Yahoo News this morning: (the four or five stories that show on their main page)

Mexican Air Force Pilots Film 11 UFOs

Tue May 11, 6:05 PM ET

MEXICO CITY - Mexican Air Force pilots filmed 11 unidentified flying objects in the skies over southern Campeche state, a Defense Department spokesman confirmed Tuesday.

A videotape made widely available to the news media on Tuesday shows the bright objects, some sharp points of light and others like large headlights, moving rapidly in what appears to be a late-evening sky.

The lights were filmed on March 5 by pilots using infrared equipment. They appeared to be flying at an altitude of about 3,500 meters (11,480 feet), and allegedly surrounded the Air Force jet as it conducted routine anti-drug trafficking vigilance in Campeche. Only three of the objects showed up on the plane's radar.

"Was I afraid? Yes. A little afraid because we were facing something that had never happened before," said radar operator Lt. German Marin in a taped interview made public Tuesday.

"I couldn't say what it was ... but I think they're completely real," added Lt. Mario Adrian Vazquez, the infrared equipment operator. Vazquez insisted that there was no way to alter the recorded images.

The plane's captain, Maj. Magdaleno Castanon, said the military jets chased the lights "and I believe they could feel we were pursuing them."

When the jets stopped following the objects, they disappeared, he said.

A Defense Department spokesman confirmed Tuesday that the videotape was filmed by members of the Mexican Air Force. The spokesman declined to comment further and spoke on customary condition of anonymity.

The video was first aired on national television Monday night then again at a news conference Tuesday by Jaime Maussan, a Mexican investigator who has dedicated the past 10 years to studying UFOs.

"This is historic news," Maussan told reporters. "Hundreds of videos (of UFOs) exist, but none had the backing of the armed forces of any country. ... The armed forces don't perpetuate frauds."

Maussan said Secretary of Defense Gen. Ricardo Vega Garcia gave him the video on April 22.

The Canadian PM's plane recently had a close brush with something unidentified in mid-air. They think it was a meteorite, but can't really be sure.

Search on Yahoo's site for their news - there was a video attached to the story that I couldn't run on my computer cause it doesn't have the program. It's just lights flying around in formation, very tiny lights.

I dunno, I can't help feeling that flying saucers are a bit " Nineties " these days. If these really are aliens, and they've got a point to make, wouldn't they have landed and made it by now ? Just a thought.

UFO sightings ALWAYS increase at times of heavy military action in the world.

Hmm. Could there be a link?

It's obviously the interplanetary equivelent of Bush arranging for Bin Laden's family to be airlifted out of the US after 9/11. The end days are here!

the mexican UFO-case is a very good and modern example for the power of disinformation:

-first the mass-media networks told us, there have been UFOs over mexico, seen and confirmed by mexican air force officials (even in austria, where i live, the orf (=the public austrian broadcast corporation) mentioned the incident on its webpage and tv-news).

-one day later "news" were spread disease-like over the internet, saying, the lights must have been "ball-lightnings" (this version -although unconfirmed by scientists- was later used by the orf to officially "explain" the sightings )or satellite- or meteorite-debris.

to see the absolute imbecility of these "explanations" you have to remember some little facts:
- the sighting happened ONLY in infrared-spectrum, the UFOs were NOT visible for blank eyes: no satellite- or meteorite-debris or lightning ball flies only in infrared light...
- the lights (some say 11, some say one huge, flexible object) flew parallel to the ground, the did NOT "fall". they also lined up to the military jets. i´m not sure, if satellite- or meteorite-debris or lightnings are flying in such formations parallel to and 3600 meters above ground.

one question remains:
why is it impossible to discuss the UFO - topic in public without getting disavowed?
is it because people fear the possibility not to be the center of the universe?
is it because UFOs are secret military weaponry, maybe based on german technology used by the usa?
is it because too much has happened the last 60 years and too much bad intelligence related operations were conducted?
or is it simply because nobody knows anything about UFOs and this is a very embarassing fact for "honorable" scientists?

remember: in the late 18th century a scientist said that huge meteorites sometimes fall from the sky. the official scientific and academic world replied: "what a nonsense! no one could install big stones in the sky so it´s impossible that such stones fall down from there."

the real bad thing is: there are many scientists who would like to research UFOs; but if they talk about in public they are derided.
we are still close to the middle age.

I vividly recall the Yahoo story having accompanying pictures and video of a bunch of small white things in the sky (a clear blue sky). It didn't seem like it was only infrared to me. How does this jive with your saying it was only infrared? Apparently people in the city watched it on their TV in their homes at the time (or after the footage was released).

I don't follow UFOlogy at all, but it seemed to be that theories got disavowed when they managed to get someone from the Air Force involved, and the disavowal is a professional stating that he has no information to back up the hypothesis, the rest of the time they are ignoring the crackpots. This doesn't seem to me like 'evil conspiracy to stop the people learning THE TRUTH!' but more people stating they have no evidence to back up a hypothesis, which is normally all the UFOlogists have.

Too many researches have diagnosed mental conditions and an inability to consider that their ideas might be wrong. I'd like to name it 'The Sim Diagnosis' if I were allowed.

the ínfrared thing was in the first press report, and tjhe video footage is an infrared-cam footage, recorded by on-board-IR-camera systems of the jets..

@ Our Shortened Lady Of Th

the "ufologists" who have some hypothesis are like scientists (sometimes they ARE scientists, don´t forget this fact) with theories about yet unsolved scientific mysteries.
the difference between a serious acting ufo-researcher and a cracked mad scientist is simple to see: the mad one is a believer, the scientist follows facts and empiric methods. a believer will never accept the possibility that his ideas may be wrong, a REAL scientist is a born doubter.

but: UFOs are a real phenomenon; thousands of sightings worldwide, every year... and appr. 4 - 5% are definitively no fakes or hoaxes. but we do not know, WHAT they are or to what purpose they exist. we can not say that they are extraterrestrial even most people believe that they are, for they´ve seen all those movies with aliens etc.

together with a friend i´ve seen a huge object in 1990... but i am not sure what it has been or if it has been a flying machine or something else. all i can say is: it was incredibly interesting, and i had not the slightest fit of fear.

The FAA has an official protocol for UFO sightings.

Just, y'know, for the record.
