The Mighty THOR!

What are your favorite issues? I remember one with tall gaunt albinos encased in body/battle armor cruising along in battle machines with spiderlike legs. Another concerned the Gray Gargoyle leading a band of space pirates. Another with the excellent equine Beta Ray Bill battling Sutur and finally the dread Warren Ellis issues. Comic Book guy told me that he thought Thor was gay because how could anyone insert that many thee's and thou's into a sentence. But how can you trust a guy who wears a Green Lantern shirt that is 3 sizes too small and threadbare.

Simonson's whole THOR run. Warren Ellis' run was ok, it was cool when he hooked up for real with Amora the Enchantress (plus nice cheesecake Deodato art!). Ellis also did a nice bit with the World Tree Ygdrassil or whatever it's called. Jurgens' first 5 issues were old school simple fun, then the book got really bad. Although Tom Raney's short run on the current THOR book sure was purty.

They're about to collect the Ellis run in trade, I think, and the Simonson run was all just collected by Marvel. Simonson's THOR is pure comic book gold. Gold, I say!!! Whether you wear a threadbare Green Lantern t-shirt or not!

I agree with FinderWolf completely (except for the part about Jurgens, who I just don't like), but I have to make two corrections:

1) There's still one more Simonson trade to go, by my count, which should include his seminal "Mjolnir's Song" issue.

2) Ellis's run is being RE-collected, as "Thor:Worldengine" is out of print.

My favorite Thor story is the first Mangog story by Kirby/Lee. Out of the billions of comics I seem to havce read, this is the first one that had a sense of impending doom that pushed you through the story at a faster and and faster rate. Probably the best work done on the character.

Simonson's Thor run is definately the definative Thor. It does not get any better than that.

Although in most areas Neil Gaiman's new 1602 was lacking, the medieval interpretation of Thor as the secret of the Knights Templar was very interesting and original.

Simpsons Thor - the issue where it was splash page apleanty, Thor chained up everything going wrong. Great.

Good - I was hoping they'd collect his whole run, complete with his final issue which he wrote and drew with Thor fighting the World Serpent (which turned out to be Fin Fang Foom, in a brilliant move by Simonson).

Other way around, actually. The Serpent was impersonating Fing.

Thor's appearances in Paradise X:Ragnarock is quite good.

I liked it when Simonson turned Thor into a frog.

I read Ballad of Beta Ray Bill and even with my then terrible teenage pre-Moore/Morrison/indie comix sensibilities it read like octopushit.

WorldEngine was great when I read the trade back I was fifteen but reading it a few years later proved it wasn't a very good comic.

I don't think Thor has any good stories.

Always liked Thor, myself, from Simonson's epic poem to the cheesy homages of the DeFalco era (including Eric Masterson...one of the mainstream's best characters). I even liked a little of what Jurgens attempted, although it did turn towards the pathetic fairly quickly. It's very very difficult to think of my all-time favorite issue, but I'm sure it's something by Simonson.

Eric Masterson...one of the mainstream's best characters).
are you kidding?
he was just a peter parker rip with a beard, man.

"bitten by a radioactive thunder god, eric masterson is cast into a world of mythtery he is ill prepared to understand!"

it was all second string spidey-style wisecracks and a whole bunch of people explaining for camera that eric was truly a great human being without once making it a convincing accolade; he was a cheesy everyman we were expected to believe was worthy.

the only way he was good was that even the lamest of the lame could imagine themselves being worthy of mjolnir after his shot at it.

did you read thunderstrike?
i bought it when i was younger and still being a bit completist, and i feel stupid for having done so.
the only reaosn i keep them around is because i spent so much fucking money on them.

although my favourite thor run is still simonson's, i enoyed what little i read of jurgens' run, especially with stuart immonen as artist (including the special silent issue) which i enjoyed most (jurgens' "asgardian" dialogue is...uh...)). immonen really gets some drama out of his artwork and power and not fake "jim lee" power that keeps shouting "i'm really dynamic, look at me!" in order to make up for its lack of actual substance. (not to slight jim lee too much, he can be a good artist when he puts the work in, but i can slight his esthetic choices!) (slight...sleight?)

Bah. I liked Masterson, dammit, and a lot more than Peter Parker. DeFalco is nowhere near the level of the best writers, but his Thor stuff with Frenz was fun, in a Lee/Kirby jazzy joycore sorta way. And I don't have a lot of Thunderstrikes, but those were of the same vein.

But hey, you're talking to a guy whose favorite comics character is the Elongated Man...

As the movie A Night On The Town clearly points out- Thor is not a homo!

...oh, and when they make a Thor movie, it totally has to have AC/DC's Thunderstruck playing for, like the entire movie.
