Best supporting character

Ball rolling, Roger the Ghost in Shade the Changing Man, one of the most rounded character studies in comics ever presents Marvin the Paranoid Android as a dead black ex-lover of one of the main characters.

Oberon was pretty good in JLI.

As for worst, any woman that wasn't a criminal in any Batman book just seemed to be crowbarred in.

Thank you, for some reason I was thinking of Phillip from rising damp when i was writing this, and it got jammed in the brain - Roger. It's been a long morning!

I really liked Matthew in Sandman.

Just this nice, dumb raven guy. Shit as a human, though. Take note, Caitlin R. Kiernan.

John Constantine in Swamp Thing.

Penny Moon, "Spook" in Zenith, just because I fancied her in her 1960s incarnation (the Phil Oakey heavy head haircut, and the Charlie Brown zigzag sweater) then her sensible-chic 1980s reworking with the beret, blonde bob flat shoes and matelot shirt. Yum, she was the hottest girl in superhero comics -- and she was medium height, small-busted and didn't wear revealing spandex.

She did appear naked, though.

Worst: I hated that Middenface McNulty, whose Jock accent was both awful and unfunny, but topping even him was that appalling character in the early 90s version of Sam Spade Robohunter -- a gay robot or insect or something, an alien anyway, whose homosexuality was signified by

a) a peaked leather cap

b) a pink triangle badge

c) pink lipstick

d) the name "Ducky".

That this homophobic atrocity saw the light of day is, I think, a genuinely poor reflection on the writer, artist and editors involved.

Worst: Oh so many, but I think Squidboy (Sammy I believe) from the one Uncanny issue I picked up was pretty fuckin' lame.

Best: If u want to treat Beast (Hank McCoy) as a supporting character in NXM, it'd be him... however, if not, I'd say both Foggy Nelson and Ben Urich in Bedis's Daredevil has been quite excellent especially in past year.

Kovacs, or anyone that knows, did Mark Millar write that?

I would kind of doubt it as I thought Millar was pretty good, but it's possible.

Best supporting character: Lenny from Shade the Changing Man. Perhaps some of the other characters were better rounded - or maybe it had more to do with the fact that she was a fairly shallow and vain shit (not that she wasn't the first to admit it). But you just have to love a bitingly sharp female character who is introduced when she holds up a taxi cab at gunpoint and who then steals the hero's girl-friend.

And she got all the best lines.

And I might have fancied her.

Lt. Marissa Rahm from Deathwish. Never read the book, I just like the idea of a pre-op male-to-female transgendered bald PREGNANT cop. Sounds like either the worst German porn film or the best episode of Springer, or is it the other way 'round?

Re: Robohunter was indeed Millar, and Christ in a Cortina was it bad. Fucking smug post-modern wank wehich removed all the charm of a great character in one fell humourless 90's swoop.

Best supporting character - THB from, well, THB.

Oh no, The Jiggler in Thb. And Dawk Carlisle. The both of ‘em, devastatingly sexy arty types that they are. I loved all that stuff where Dawk’s patiently explaining how to make lithographs.

The Love Glove in Doom Patrol. His origin story involves a going to a Ride gig, ferchrissake. There aren’t enough fey indie-boy supervillans in comics.

The Falcon

Robohunter was indeed Millar, and Christ in a Cortina was it bad.

I rather feared it was. He does dismiss it as wank these days, hisself.

Worst supporting character has to be "Snapper" Carr. Just what the world needs, a Rick Jones clone who snaps his fingers a lot. You know D.C.'s stable of septagenererian hacks still had their finger on the pulse of today's youth culture when they thought THAT one up.

millar had a robohunter scene where slade and foul-mouthed adult-baby Captain Kidd re-enact the russian roulette scene from deer hunter, but their tormentors are robot lookylikes of hawkeye, bj honeycut, charles, radar, klinger and the rest. nothing wrong with that.
