A good friend of mine, impressed by the quality of writing he’s seem in letters from friends but annoyed by the lack of any decent forum for discourse among student/post-student types, has taken it upon himself to launch a new style of magazine.
Basically, the deal is that he’s trying to get together as many “intelligent young people in (but not necessarily from) the UK” as possible who are prepared to submit one piece of writing to each issue. Submissions can range from a short column to a full academic essay, can be in any form (or lack of form) and can cover any range of subject matter under the sun (in fact “anything which can be expressed on flat, black & white paper” is permissible). The sole rule being that everything should be “engaging, thought-provoking and original” (to which I’d add “..without being too formal and boring”). Responses to / comments on other people’s work will be encouraged.
(BTW, I’m guessing the definition of ‘young’ is going to be extremely flexible – we’re certainly not going to turn away anybody who wants to get involved for being ‘too old’ in a scary Midwich Cookoos fashion or anything..)
Distribution at the start is going to be extremely small; Each contributor will be sent a copy for themselves plus a number of spare copies which they can either pass on to other people they know who might be interested, or try and distribute via shops or libraries, hopefully slowly building up a level of interest.
Anybody who’s interested in finding out more: best get in touch with me I suppose as the future Captain of this venture doesn’t currently have internet access.
Comments or discussion of the above pitch also welcomed of course.. |
