Anthology

Dear all,

I've been wanting for some time to put together an Anthology book (graphic mainly) as a showcase for those talents who want to get into the field of comics but can't because there's no money in them thar hills and anyway have you had anything published...etc.

I know this stuff has been done before, and 2000ad is alive and well and Warrior folded years ago, but basically, what I'm proposing is a book that serves as an apprentiship for bigger and better things.

My outline is as follows;

The book is to be called 'Prologue' - the way I see it it is unrealistic to look at weekly or even monthly releases, and quarterly titles never really hit the mark, especially if they contain several on-going but short story lines. So a bi-monthly or even six week window seems best.

It will contain 5 - 7 stories per issue, each about 5-7 pages long (keeping within the 2000ad framework, also makes for tighter story telling and less padding). These can be on-going strips told in chunks (books or whatever you want to call them, thus allowing rotation).

Each part of the whole (ie the writing or art or lettering or editing) will be completed by a person per-part. Basically, I see this is a way for a person to prove that they can do whatever part of whatever field they want to do - so no writer/artists and although collaboration is part of this process undoubtedly, I don't think that it's fair that artist a tells writer x how to do it, or vice versa. It's a springboard apprenticeship.

All works ownership is to be retained by the creators - naturally.

This is not a money making scheme, it is purely for the love - any money made will go back into the book to provide materials and better paper, printing processes shipping etc.

Okay, I know it's all a little pipe-dreamy, but I have wanted to self-publish for ages, and have had trouble with artists, paper, printing everything, so what I'm proposing is getting together and using all of our strengths to produce something. Not just writers and artists - anyone who thinks that they can manage the whole affair, or wants to be an editor, or letterer or colourist, I could go on and on - basically, it's a low-fi way of showing the hi-fi people out there that you can do what you want and a nice little piece for the cv.

Any advice, help or takers?

How are you planning to publish it? I wanted to start something similar to this (a literary journal) but ended up giving up on it because it was just too hard. But that's not to discourage you - I'm hoping that you can pull this off!

Also...
Although I don't have much free time or experience, I could certainly lend a hand when it comes to things like design (I have Photoshop, and am pretty skilled at it).

Oh yeah...
and could you PLEASE, for the love of God, aim for something at least semi-intellectual. I'm sick and tired of all the midless crap that's out there, I'm ready for something smart, something different, and I'm sure others are as well. You should even branch out into other areas of the comic genre: funny paper stuff, experimental, political cartoons... you'd get alot more submissions and a much wider audience... which is a very good thing.

Just out of interest, what do you plan on contributing to this proposed anthology? Are you planning to act as publisher, footing the printing costs (and no matter how low-fi you go there will be printing costs)...

Okay, firstly I plan on doing some writting, I already have the first part of a three part series plotted and most of the first bits scripted.

I would hope that this would act as as wide as possible (in terms of genre and style) a publication - and yes I've been looking at costs for the publication of the first few issues and materials etc. I wouldn't want anything more than to be a contributing writer - I hope that want to be editors would come forward and take up that slack, and maybe even people who are interested in and therefore have a greater business acumen to take up the side of actaully putting the piece together. I just want to get the ball rolling.

I know that there will be costs, what I'm hoping is that enough people realise this and get together with the desire to get it done that the ball can roll on beyond the initial push.

I'd also like to act as a central point for submissions (ideally people would submit story ideas, artists would say I think that I can bring that to life or add something to it, the two would get together with the necessary other creatives, and the stories would be told - for the sake of actually meeting deadlines, everything would be in place, hopefully, before it is announced, and there would be a few stories to get the ball rolling) no judgement from me though (that would be down to the individual editors to each piece). But I'd sort through letters, submissions and the such.

Sorry for any spelling mistakes in this post, I'm back from an absinthe session, and lights keep flashing around my fingers, besides, I'm not an editor!

Oh, and ten, any design work contributions would be greatly appreciated, as I said this should be a springboard for all talents.

Provided that getting together the money for the actual printing (and, of course, getting the material) are not problems, I think the main stumbling block is distribution -- how do you intend on getting the book into stores? If you're not, well, shy, you can probably get it on the shelves of local shops, but national (or international) distribution seems like it would be a lot harder. Honestly, if it's just about self-promotion (meant in a good way) and doing it for its own sake (i.e., without thinking it'll necessarily lead to fame and fortune), I'd think about doing this on the web...I write and edit for a site that runs fiction serially, and it's not without its rewards (um, although pretty much none of them are financial -- actually, I've had to put money *into* the site, and some others have put in a lot more, especially with the small-press print publishing that we've kinda eased into as well as keeping the site in motion). I know it's cooler to actually have a print mag, but....yeah. How does one go about getting distribution for an indie comic book?

That's one of the reasons for the post. To try and coax out business minded people as well as artist minded people - somebody on here must have an idea for distribution, be interesting to see if they are willing to share.

obviously, the internet can help A LOT. I'd just recomend starting a website (well designed, to attract potential buyers who want more info), get together some advertising money, and buying some ads (both online and off). If the ads are well done, people will want to check out your website, and if your website is well done, people will want to check out the publication, and if the publication is well done, they'll tell all of their freinds. I'm not exactly sure the BEST way to go about finding financial backers (I'm sure you'll need some), but I'd recomend checking out Craig's List (check the right hand side for city listings other than SF). As for the design aspects mentioned above, I'd be more than willing to do some of that, so when you get to that point, just ask.

Our very own Mr. Six is already trying to pull this off. I think it's a great idea but instead of creating a competeing anthology, why not pull your resourses together and make a better one?

Here's the link to the thread and the Zebra site.
