Just a question which popped up at work today:
IS there a distinct difference in the use of the terms Shi'ite and Shia? They refer to the same people, but is one advjectival or a proper noun? Most peole seem to have shifted to Shia recently.

Should this not be in the Magick/Temple section, or is it just me? I don't mean any offense to cube, but this doesn't seem particularly magickally related, other than it deals with the names of a religious sect.

The Shia are "the Muslims of the branch of Islam comprising sects believing in Ali and the Imams as the only rightful successors of Muhammad and in the concealment and messianic return of the last recognized Imam."

A Shi'ite is "a Muslim of the Shia branch of Islam."

As, i was going to make a topic on this this evening but this thread will serve nicely for my question.

Q: What are the primary differences between the Sunni and Shi'ite schools of Islam?

The Sunni branch of Islam acknowledges the first four caliphs (Abu Bakr, 'Umar, Uthman and Ali) as the rightful successors of Muhammad. The Shia branch of Islam acknowledges Ali and the Imams (descendants of Muhammad, through his daughter Fatima Zahra and her husband Ali) as the rightful successors of Muhammad.

Within the Shia branch, you have several other splits based on who it is believed the rightful successors were. Seveners, Fivers, so on and so forth.
