The Sunni branch of Islam acknowledges the first four caliphs (Abu Bakr, 'Umar, Uthman and Ali) as the rightful successors of Muhammad. The Shia branch of Islam acknowledges Ali and the Imams (descendants of Muhammad, through his daughter Fatima Zahra and her husband Ali) as the rightful successors of Muhammad.
Within the Shia branch, you have several other splits based on who it is believed the rightful successors were. Seveners, Fivers, so on and so forth. |
