Tape recorder

has anyone used a tape recorder or video camera to a magickal end? ive read some burroughs in the third mind where he talks about using a recorder to record the normal sounds outside a cafe he disliked,

took the recording of the natural enviroment he wanted to do work on and recorded "danger sounds" over it of sirens, etc.

then returned to the spot and played it with the danger sounds sort of sonically cursing the spot.

according to his and brion gysins account the place burnt down along with the lady inside.

anyone done anything similar with a tape recorder?

ive also heard about using polaroid and drawing sigils over a photo of a subject before it fully develops.

anyway food for thought.

The Fall 2003 (I think) issue of Ashe (www.ashe-prem.org) has an article on using tape recorders and cameras--written by a friend of Burroughs.

It seems like a really interesting, effective way to create mayhem. I bet it could be adapted for any purpose.

Something similiar? Give this a try...

I've a digital recorder - tiny little thing. I also had a roommate who was lonely: twenty years and never a girlfriend. One day he met a lady from work, brought her home. I had a recording of him talking - reading articles he'd written for a paper, ironic and dry. I played these back and cut in orgasmic moans from another piece of media. Played the whole deal, volume low, outside his door while they laughed and chatted inside. That was perhaps five months ago - they're still dating. I can't quite attribute objective reality to this, but it didn't seem to hurt. Of coarse, I two regular 'find-somebody-to-love' sigils inside his room - one behind a picture and another wrapped around a condom beneath his sheets. He found one but didn't say anything - doesn't believe in magick, the poor ghet.

Also, had a good deal of success with hypnotizing myself into a more relaxed and confident state of mind through zazen meditation while having a recorder going on, loaded with messages I wanted to imprint in my melon. Robert Anton Wilson recommends this in a part of the Illuminati Papers ("This Is a Magic Letter") - meditate with a brain-change message playing in the background, and eventually it'll take. Just enchant/invoke often enough. Immediately after these workings, I tried this for psychic powers - ESP, mindreading, and so on - with less success so far. In these cases I mixed the audio so much you can't tell what is said - an attempt to reduce conscious awareness of the spell. No psychic powers as the SciFi Channel's conditioned me to expect, but I did get strange visions of triangles and X-Files styled Greys during the gnosis-fueled listenings (either meditation or a dead run). Once again, not an absolute or objective reality by far, but an interesting side-effect of the effort.

Worth trying. Also, I've read somewhere (Scientific American?) that if you have two audio tracks playing simultaneously, one going into each ear, you mind consciously gets one. The other writes itself into your subconscious. If you've swallowed a psychological explanation of magick - like me, for now - it's potentially a faster/better way to cast an audio spell.

After watching a Channel 4 documentary, I've been wanting to use a digital voice recorder dictaphone yokey to try and get some Electronic Voice Phenomenon goodness.

You should look into some William S. Burroughs. In a great number of his books he talks about the magickal uses of a tape recorder. The particularly interesting stuff is his use of the cut-up technique with recorded sound to influence situations. There is a story of how he caused a restraunt to close by walking by it everyday with a tape recorder and playing a cut-up of "distress" sounds. He has also written about communication from the other side via tape recorder. His work can be hard to digest so I suggest you start out with The Adding Machine which is a collection of his essays on everything from cut-up magick to the Great Gatsby. It is uncharacteristically straightforward and a joy to read. Plus the experiments he suggests are quite fun to conduct. Nearly all of his work mentions his crackpot magick philosophy and how to apply it to things like tape recorders, typewriters, cameras, and painting.

yeh, ive actually been reading alot of burroughs and tahts what prompted this post. i foudn what he was saying about the whole tape recorder trouble sounds thing really exciting. once i find my mini-cassette recorder im gonna go try it out on the local starbucks.

ive also been thinking about trying this technique i read, where a sigil is scratched into a polaroid photo before it fully develops. seems like it would be an effective method of magick and ive only heard good things from people who have tried it.

anyway ovr and out

You can use Mantras downloaded from internet, indeed some themes of trance that are usefull to get into a repetitive mantra-kind-of.

But be carefull, some bands or DJ has already set ups their music into sigilisation, and you maybe are "burning" something that you dont want.

The best chose is to remix your own music.

Hi all,
to all those of you who have successfully used tape recorder magick (I've made a successful rain spell using a tape recorder three days ago): Have you used some form of gnosis? Which one?

Thanks!

I have done some recent work with cut ups and tapes recently. One was using recordings I made of rune meditations and mixing bits from each rune into a word spell. Unfortunatly I used my only copy of the rune meditation recording but next time I plan to have more than one tape to use.

I'm musing over getting a camera fone - then you could do nifty montages - anyone tried this? And with sound look at the stuff Chris Morris' Sound Team do for celebs!

I have felt infatuated with the Burroughs story of the surly old cigarette kiosk lady in Paris. Burroughs would patron it every day and the lady was always rude. One day Brion calls on him in his room at the 'beat hotel' and finds him working with a photo of it. Burroughs cuts the kiosk out of the picture and tapes it back together without it. According to several people's accounts the kiosk burned down a few days later witht he woman inside.
I have really wanted to employ this to something, but each time I think of a target I find myself looking deeper into the reality of the situation and seeing the spiderweb of people who will be hurt. I too thought of Strabucks, but then I thought, 'hey, I know some good people who work at places like this just to pay bills'. Then I thought of a place where I used to work years ago, a restaurant a friend's mom owned. When I quit it was because her sister in law and brother swindled it out from under her. They are REALLY shitty people. Perfect candidate? Maybe, but then I thought, for the overall scheme of my life and workings, shouldn't I be over that and beyond going back for old 'just deserts'? I mean, when dealing with these unseen forces of power, I have long felt it better (and more empowering) to be able to let things roll of my back, thus preventing negative energy from accumulating and fucking up my 'aura' or whatever you want to call it.
So, my ? is, anyone have any ideas about a worthwhile target? I mean, the corporate franchises are also pretty pointless unless you are ambitious enough and strategic enough to attack their hq's, cuz you take out one little chain and 40 more will spring (and of course innocents work in the hq as well, but they would potentially be a more stomachable casualty than the people making $5.15 p/h, just depends on how you look at it, cuz' anywhich way, in this type of action, someone WILL get burned. We as instigators just need to put spin on the damage control).
I have recently thought of these CAR Title Loan places, as they are really just entities that take total advantage of people with problems.
What say You?
Cheers

Well, I instantly thought of my country's defense ministry. Not only are they involved in various conflicts, but I also have a personal grudge against them from my time served. The best of both worlds: altruism and revenge.
Or find someone who has personally done something wrong, but for some reason is outside the reach of the law (I can think of several). make a little sigil to burn down their house or whatever.
But if you have problems with accumulating negativity, then how about this: Find an organisation you think is doing valuable work, but is lacking ressources. Go to their office and record a sample, or record their jingle or whatever. Then combine it with the sound of coins clinging. Something similar could be done with photographs.
It's karmafree magic.
