So just the other week I'm out shopping and decide to buy a copy of 'The Housemartins - Now that's what I call quite good'. I've had a copied version for years but decided it was about time I actually paid for it. So I did. Next day they release a new 'Greatest Hits' compilation complete with free D.V.D. How do they always know when to do that?

Anyway, after much listening to both albus over the last couple of days I'm reminded of just how much I like them. They're a top band. Top tunes. Top lyrics. Just all round top. I'm sure someone will point out why they're not though if I wait long enough. But I want to know other peoples opinions on them, so that's good.

I've been revisiting the Housemartins lately, and I'm a bit amazed that the only 'lith thread on them was about two years old. Really, sincerely one of my favourite bands ever, and an unbeatable blend of university-age leftist outrage (or maybe that's me, projecting my "Housemartins Years" onto the band) with pure pop genius.

In those heady pre-Internet years, I didn't always get what they were on about ("Got Blue Peter to stage an appeal" gave me a lot of trouble, for instance), but loved them nonetheless. The sustained high note on "World's on Fire" is still one of my favourite musical moments of all time.

My love followed them into the first two Beautiful South albums, but after Miaow I sort of tuned out.

As stated, though, I've loved the Housemartins since I was a wee 'un. I still play "Now That's What I Call Quite Good" when I'm feeling down.

flag day contains possibly my favourite lyric from any song ever:

too many florence nightingales, not enough robin hoods.
too many halos, not enough heroes coming up with the goods

I like the 'martins, too.

for me it's interesting, after they all shaved crosses into their hair and claimed to be Christians, how far Paul Heaton has gone to distance himself from any Christian ideas...
