French Pop Design

I'm helping my girlfriend design a poster to advertise a class she's teaching on French pop culture at NYU.

now, for some reason i have it in mind that the poster design should be a reference to the 60s in France, and we defininately want to use a photo of good old Brigitte Bardot. her class will go all the way through this decade, including contemporary comics of the sort that Humanoids is putting out these days. Nevertheless, i feel like the most eye catching poster will reference 60s french pop. Somthing about bubbles/circles is in my mind for some reason, as well as the circle shapes and round-cornered boxes that Roman Coppola's CQ uses. not sure what the source is for all this though. i've been googling around a lot, but i haven't been able to find a very good reference. so... does anyone have some good ideas or images about French pop graphic design?

Feel free to turn this into a much broader/theoretical discussion, but support it will cool pix i can use!

Try looking at books on Dada and Constructivism; try watching Breathless.

Ooh, you should do a little research on French Lettrism (also Lettrisme), perhaps starting with the 'father,' Isidore Isou. The philosophy's a bit nutty (in the best possible way of course), but the emphasis on alphabet would probably dovetail nicely with poster design.

I've always really loved these images - really simple prints produced for flyposting in May '68.

somewhere in this forum is a topic I either started or contributed to about "anarchist images" -- links to various archives, including a couple that had a bunch of may '68 material (as linked above by 1truejames).

Some of the record covers here might be inspirational -- google for the musicians, and you might find more.
