I'm not a fan boy, but...

Okay, at a convention years ago I saw Peter Milliagan, who I've always loved as a writer, at the Shade stand, and spent an hour or so trying to think of a clever question to ask him when I went up to get something signed. Finally settling on a question about bit-character Phil-the-Ghost, I appraoched asked my question and thought that it would lead to a conversation. It almost did as Mr Milligan asked me a question about my question, I froze, mummbled 'don't know' like a tacitern two year old and shuffled off. Anybody else had an embaressing fan boy moment?

This is slightly off-topic, but I met Steve Coogan at a party a couple of years ago, the conversation went as follows:

Self - " I, er, really like your work, man. "

Coogan - " Thanks. "

Pause.

" Um... Can I get you a drink ? "

" No, I'm okay. "

Pause.

" Right... Well I'm going to the bar... I'll, er, see you later... "

" Mm. "

End.

Similarly, at the same do ( Oh the glamorous life I used to lead, for five to ten minutes back in the Nineties, ) I met Robbie Williams.

Williams - " Have you got a cigarette ? "

Self - " Er... yeah. "

" Have you got a light ? "

" I think so... somewhere... "

" Ta. "

End.

Personally, I can't really deal with celebrities at all.

I faired bettter with celebrities over the years, but a particularly (not necassarily embarrassing) but uncomfortable moment occured when I met Mark Waid. I had a copy of X-Men: Alpha with me at a signing, I had had Scott Lobdell sign the same copy a few months prior (they both shared writing credit), but Lobdell's pen burst it's silver ink all over the cover. I figured I'd have Waid sign it just for the hell of it, along with a Kingdom Come poster, this how it played out...

Me: How you doing?

Waid: Good

(I hand him the comic, he looks at it confused)

Me: Yeah, uh, Scott Lobdell kinda crapped all over it.

Waid: hm. funny.

He said it so flatly that, without knowing if I said anything wrong, I felt completely uncomfortable. I could only guess that maybe he didn't like working with Lobdell or something. He signed the Kingdom Come, but with an uncomfortable silence. I don't know why it froze me in my tracks but I just felt like I had done something wrong. To this day I am intimidated by Mark Waid now.

Incidently, any celebrities who were surprisingly pleasant that you remember...off the top of my head I can say Jim Lee, Phil Jimenez, Chyna, Edge (wrestler), Mark Bagley, Adam Kubert, Brain O' Halloran (from Clerks), Joe Quesada, Tom Defalco (I didn't really meet him, but he actually took time to write a snot nose kid, me, only 12, a letter filled with answers to stupid questions). There may be more but I cant recall, right now.
