Reith lectures

So. Reith lecture season is almost upon us, and this year the theme might be of interest to ‘Lithers: a series of talks about the global ‘climate of fear’. I know you get more actual information from reading a book, but I like the polemical, persuasive form a short lecture can have; if the speaker is charismatic as well as informed, then it’s moving and rousing and stuff like that. Plus, it’s a format we can all share as an experience, maybe it’d be interesting to talk about them afterwards. I’ve never actually read any Wole Soyinka, and it looks like he’ll be talking about events I’m equally unfamiliar with, so it’ll be educational. And probably horrifying. But possibly hopeful and constructive as well.

Er, anyway. BBC Reith lecture page here, with more about Soyinka and the content of the series.

The beeb are promising to provide full audio replay capability and complete transcripts of each lecture right after broadcast, so anyone who wants to will be able to properly reference passages and cut ‘n paste quotes and stuff without necessarily having to spend Wednesday nights huddled around the old radiogram with a notebook. Also, this means non-UK based Lithers will be able to follow the series in full.

Of course, if nobody else has the time to make an actual thread out of this, that’s cool too, it’s probably still going to be good listening. In which case, I’m just sayin’.

I think people might be interested to know that this year's Reith Lectures will also be available online after the event as MP3s - but keep that amongst yourselves. I work in BBC Radio and Music Interactive and people are terribly excited about this, because it means you can take this stuff with you on the road to listen to in the bus on an MP3 player or whatever. I did this last year with some personally recorded versions of the lectures and really got involved in them, even though i'm not a regular Radio 4 listener.

I can now confirm that the lectures are available in MP3 format and will be put up online here: Reith Lecture Downloads as MP3

Does anyone know if these are still available in mp3 format anywhere? as the page has disappeared from the BBC's website.

I did e-mail the BBC asking them, but have received no response.

Are us North Americans supposed to know what Reith lectures are?

Don't you have google in North America? Finding the answer that way would surely be far quicker than typing out the question here, dude.

Anyway. Brief history of Reith lectures.

From that link you can get to audio of Reith lectures from this year and several previous years, if I understand correctly. Which isn't a given in matters technical. But try the box on the left.

Wow, now it seems a bit weird that I met and performed for Soyinka a couple of years ago... we were working with many people from Nigerian theatre at the time. I love that voice!

I have to say, if you are interested in language, read his play The Road, or any of his other works. It is fascinating both in plot and in style. No, really -- it's like nothing else I ever read.
