Controlling the image of reality

My friend Andreas has written an article on "the relation between the medialised image and the individual as well as the struggle to free the common image of reality from the authorian grasp of centralised mass media."
Read it here

The end of the article is a "Call to Arms". But what kind of arms do we have? Massmedia has obviously great influence on our image of reality. If we want to create a new reality - how should we handle them? An EMP under the broadcasting building? I don't think it would be very popular...

Not sure about the whole plan, but stage one is turn off the t.v.

Realistically the world's going to be different just because everyone else is watching television. Turning your own off doesn't necessarily fix that. And I"m not convinced that detournement doesn't just perpetuate the problem of cynicism and the concept of reality being an image.

Do you mean TV by mass media? Or the internet? Radio reaches millions every day. and I've heard rumors that the New York Times sometimes manages to ensnare people outside of the bounds of this country EVERY day with it's memes. Each of these four media types are "mass" and yet each affects and effects viewers differently. The combination effects me in a specific ratio that is defined by my inherent susceptability to various media types as well as the frequency with which I interact with them.

Don't be reactionary and try and get rid of any given media. Be aware at the current state of mass media and the likely future of them. No media form can be gotten rid of, they are viral.

With statements in the "Call To Arms" like this

By creating media structures where people are allowed to participate instead of spectate, a new world of co-operative reality shaping opens.

the article seems to be endorsing distributed media models, which I tend to support as being harder for individual interests to exploit. But to be honest, any time you're relying on other people's statements for your view of reality, you're viewing things through someone else's perspective. And even in the distributed media world (e.g. blogs) certain "authoritative sources" develop.

Oh, and of course, distributed media in a generally non-distributed media world is still subject to distortion provided by the main sources, when the authors rely on major news sources for their information, which they frequently do. I'm not a fan of the "newswire" type blog, which seems to me to be nothing more than I can get from Google News.

Furthermore, the more media is distributed the more it is possible to pick and choose your sources so you end up not having your viewpoint challenged at all.

The most effective thing would seem to me to be a lot more picky about the information you take in, carefully evaluate your sources at all times, and encourage other people to do the same. And make sure your sources are as wide-ranging as possible.

With mass media I mean media with a one-to-many structure. Thus TV is mass media but and Internet could be used as one but is usually not. I do not consider this forum a mass media. What I'm worried about is the non-communicative media structures. The ones who give but doesn't take feedback.
