I've got a digital 8 track, and I want to turn the recordings I make on it into MP3s. I downloaded a free package which captures the recordings, but the recording was very poor and even skipped.

I'm going to be getting this as a (late) birthday present, so money's no object What's a good package for this? Good quality recordings, and the ability to slice them up and manipulate them in other interesting ways.

JetAudio might do it, has lots of features. Direct link to the demo here 13.8 MB. I've been using it to convert CD to WMA files for my new 256 MB CW200 digital audio player, lots of buttons and dials that leap up like frogs in a dynamite pond.

Audacity; Cool Edit; if you have money, Sound Forge.

What sort of digital eight-track - PM, if you want. Depending on the format it records to, you see, it might dump via USB (as cheap Zoom ones do) or at least have a digital out of some form. These will make your life easier.

TBH, I'd plump for Sound Forge every time. On a PC, it's the Photoshop of audio editing. Everything kind of does the same things; nothing does it as well.

It's a Tascam 788. I wish it was USB, but it's SCSI unfortunately.

A SCSI card would be very expensive, the only other option is to get a CD-writer with a SCSI interface, which probably isn't that expensive, but I'd rather be able to mess about on my computer really.

The standard Sound Forge 7.0 is too expensive. The Screenblast Sound Forge 7.0 isn't. Do your positive comments apply to the Screenblast version as well?

sharewaremusicmachine.com has a brilliant selection of freeware anf shareware for everything from Amiga to XP. Most excellent. I've filled many a harddrive with glorious soundwares.

Can you give me a link to something about Screenblast? In general, I'm not sure I'd plump for something cut down, you see. SF is wonderful. Sorry you've got no USB - yeah, the SCSI thing is a bit of a bummer. Never mind; there's a way around this yet...

Not totally the same question but I wondered if there was a way to save a sound file from the BBC's radio player? I was hoping to get a copy of 'Armando Iannucci's Charm Offensive'. I have until Wednesday to figure it out...

You can, although I wouldn't advise doing it, because it is naughty. Xi's NetTransport can capture RealAudio feeds - I think you right-click the "play in standalone realplayer" option on the BBC media player page and "Capture with NetTransport" is one of the options. If you have a Mac, you can use AudioHijack, although that is now a paid service - the free version starts putting static over your recording after 10 minutes.

Steinberg Wavelab.

It's my personal pref over Soundforge, though SF is useful for working to picture and stuff like that.

You can probably 'Try Before You Buy' by sniffing around at This naughty site

I think the latest version is being hosted on rapidshare.

There's also a Mac program called WireTap that records anything that comes over your soundcard.

So don't, like, make any error pings while you're recording your thing.

I just use an audio cable from the headphone jack to the mic jack. Does wonders. Works the same as wiretap, but more badass and crossplatform!

Soundforge 8.0 is also all over LimeWire if, you know, you're that way inclined.

If you've got a Soundblaster card, Audacity can do it for you using the "As U Hear" option on inputs.

I think I'll need a plug-in for my brain first.
