CENTRAL LONDON/ ALDERMASTON

April 9th - 12th will see the first Aldermaston march for 15 years, to oppose the development of a whole new generation nuclear weapons by the US and the attempts to create new nuke development facilities at the UK Aldermaston bomb factory. CND will be there in force and is holding a mass rally in Trafalgar Square on Easter Friday - 9th April - from 11am, to see the walkers off on their way. Speakers at the Rally include Tony Benn, Bruce Kent, Roger Lloyd Pack (Trigger from Only Fools and Horses), Jeremy Corbyn MP, Caroline Lucas MEP, Jeremy Hardy and more (see below).

Yorkshire CND plans to put on transport down to the London Rally and if you want to go we need to know immediately. Tickets will be around £10/£15 depending on ability to pay and transport won't be booked until there is
evidence of sufficient demand, so please contact us this week to register. We would hope to call at York, Leeds and Sheffield but it depends on demand.

If you are able to drive a minibus (have a pre-1997 riving licence or have earned a D1 on your licence after 1997) then let us know as we may need drivers.

It is crucial that we act now to highlight the moves for new nukes. The US plans to develop nukes that it will actually use in battle, making nuclear war, a nuclear arms race and nuclear proliferation all much more likely.

George Bush Senior, the architect of the first Gulf war, is coming to London to raise money for his son's re-election campaign.

He will be the main guest at a dinner party hosted by Republicans Abroad on Tuesday 18th of May. Tickets for the event are $1000 each!

Stop The War Coalition will be calling a mass picket of the event. Let's give George Bush senior the reception he deserves and night that the guests would wish they had not paid $1000 each to attend.

END THE TORTURE
BRING THE TROOPS HOME NOW

Saturday May 22nd, 11am

Central London, assemble Embankment (nearest tube Embankment, Charing Cross)

March to Trafalgar Square

The whole world is horrified at the terrible pictures of torture of Iraqi prisoners now emerging. They are the tip of an iceberg of abuse - dozens of civilians have died in custody of British and American troops in occupied Iraq.
The Stop the War Coalition has responded to calls from groups and individuals for an emergency demonstration to respond to the atrocities being committed in Iraq.
We are demanding the withdrawal of all troops from Iraq and for the Iraqi people to be allowed to govern themselves. Leaflets for the demonstration are available from the office.

Called by the Stop the War Coalition, CND and the Muslim Association of Britain

Leaflet here.

June 30th Protests

The supposed transfer of authority in occupied Iraq on June 30 is fast approaching. It is already clear that this will be a farce.

First, those politicians to whom power is supposed to be transferred have no mandate at all from the Iraqi people. They have, in fact, been hand-picked by the Anglo-American occupiers.

Second, the Prime Minister chosen by Washington is a long-standing CIA agent.

Third, and most important, the USA (and Britain) will retain effective power in Iraq even after the "hand-over". The US military will remain answerable to no-one, and the new Iraqi authorities will lack proper power over security, legislation and finance.

The Stop the War Coalition continues to demand a full military withdrawal from Iraq and the transfer of real sovereignty to those who genuinely represent the Iraqi people.

We therefore believe there should be a day of action in Britain on June 30 by the anti-war movement, to protest at this undemocratic farce. We would like to see symbolic protests in every community in support of the following demands:

- End to the occupation

- Iraq for the Iraqis

- Bring the troops home now

Where possible, these should be evening protests, to coincide with the actual "transfer" at midnight in Iraq, which is 9pm o'clock here.

In London, the Coalition will be organising a protest in Parliament Square from 6pm to 9pm.

Leaflets and posters will be available from the office.

PICNIC FOR PEACE

There is a Worldwide Picnic for Peace on Sunday 8th August. It is being promoted through word of mouth and the internet. There will be picnics held in Greece, USA, Sweden, Australia, India and Canada, as well as a few here in Britain.

The Stop the War Coalition, along side CND, are organising a Picnic for Peace in London, Regents Park, Sunday 8th August from 12 noon til 4pm. No speeches, no rally, just food, fun and games.

It is a child-friendly event, so bring your family, friends, neighbours and your own picnic. There will be magic, stilt walking, fire juggling, competitions with prizes and a tombola. Please could everyone bring a wrapped gift worth no more than £3 for the tombola. Also bring along your rainbow Peace flags.

STW welcomes people from outside London to join our picnic but is also encouraging groups accross the country to hold their own Picnics for Peace on the same day. It is an opportunity to get members together, encourage friends to join the peace movement and to socialise. Let the STW national office know about your local picnics so they can be promoted on the website.

Exact location for the picnic in Regents Park along with a map will be sent out nearer the time.

Fingers crossed for the sunshine to join us!
