Hmm.. Well that depends on your definition of organised religion.. I'm Balinese Hindu.. and there is a debate on whether Hindu itself is an organised religion in the first place, it is unlike the 3 main monotheistic religions, however in Hinduism there is only one God also. it does have a structural hierarchy in India and Bali, however those are based more or less on the Caste Systems, ie: a lower class priest cannot perform ceremonies for a higher caste individual, however a higher caste priest can perform rituals for any individual from any caste and is most preferable.
I do not know why there are apparently no individuals that you know that are not believers of organised religion. my theory on that is though that whilst before the religion institutions that used to control society were intolerant and not understanding of people that were not believers, now it is reversed, there are armies of intolerant athiests which condemn any and all religion. its the entire issue of who has the "moral" or "logical" highground.
the fact that believing in one would be a real "anti-conformist hipster thing" is degrading to religion. for whatever we can say abt religion today, it has been one of the things which we owe so much of our civilizations developement to. Organised religion developed in the first place to organise people, we do not live in villages anymore and our ancestors experienced a little something called the Neolithic era which led to the rise of the first real civilizations in which these concepts were developed in.
Personally, I think that it is a shame that religion is so often down-trodden on by those that consider themselves "modern" and "liberal", nowadays it is often seen as the evil which causes all of the worlds problems. But lets face it, its people who kill people, not guns, not religion, or any "conservative" ideas. I myself am a liberal, but not a "radical liberal", the problem is that most individuals like to see things as them being on the good rational side and the other ones being on the irrational bad side. but being intolerant and not understanding, whether you are part of an orgaised religion or not or have a certain mindset, it makes you just as bad as the "other people". The US government kills Iraquis because they think theyre right, Israel kills Palestinians and vice versa because they think theyre right, Al Quaeda, Hamaz, Abu Sayyaf kill people because they think theyre right, wars happen because each other side thinks theyre right and on the "good, rational" side and that the other side is just a bunch of "agressive irrational crazies" I mean, just look at what happened in the cold war and what the mindset was of either side...
ok anyway.. i digress.. hope this made sense to you. |
